So shall it be with my father: he shall be
called a prince over his posterity, holding
the keys of the patriarchal priesthood over the kingdom of God on earth, even the Church
of the Latter Day Saints, and he shall sit in the general assembly of patriarchs, even in
council with the Ancient of Days when he shall sit and all the patriarchs with him and shall
enjoy his right and authority under the direction of the Ancient of Days.

    • Brief History of Daniel R Stiles and Matilda Campbell Stiles compiled by Margaret S. Loosle. (Witten in June, 2012)

Daniel Stiles was born about 1808 to Aaron Stiles and Mary Rightenbark (also known as Polly). After moving to Pennsylvania from Orange County, New York, the family lived in present day South Creek Township of Bradford County. It is believed that Daniel was the fifth of twelve children. Matilda was born in about 1814. She was the daughter of Jonathan and Phoebe Button Campbell and was probably their youngest child. Her family also moved from eastern New York and settled in present day Ridgebury Township of the same county.

Most of the Campbell family moved north into New York State sometime after 1815 but at least one of Matilda’s older brothers, John, stayed in South Creek Township so perhaps that is where Daniel and Matilda met. They were married about 1835 and eventually had at least ten children, probably more.

Daniel is found in the tax rolls of South Creek starting as early as 1832. He held considerable property but it may have been in conjunction with his father and siblings. He is listed as a head of household in the 1840 U S Federal Census with seven persons in the household. Since the couple only had one known child at the time, it has been speculated that they had another son and a daughter, one of Daniel’s siblings, and his mother living with them.

The family has not been found in the 1850 Census but is enumerated in the 1860 Census as living in Clymer, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. The move would have been about 60 miles. They moved in next door to Daniel’s sister, Amy Schoonover. Amy was older than Daniel and had married Jonas Schoonover sometime before 1830. The most likely reason for the move was that the Stiles had lived on their farms in South Creek Township for years and the good lumber had been mostly logged out, leaving stumps everywhere making the land unsuitable for general farming.

Tioga County was just one step into the frontier. By the 1870 Census, Daniel had moved his family just over the county line into Potter County. A study of the estate records in Hector Township shows that the most likely location of their property was just west of the town of Sunderlinville.

Daniel and Matilda had the following children, ten of which are listed clearly in the 1860 Census:
      1. A possible son born between 1836 and 1840
      2. A possible daughter born between 1836 and 1840
Note: If these were the children of Daniel and Matilda as indicated in the 1840 Census, one was probably born before Stephen and one after him.
      3. Stephen b. 2 Jan 1838
      4. Fanny b. Abt 1841
      5. Chester b. 26 Sep 1842
      6. Ruth b. Feb 1844
      7. Erastus b. March 1848
      8. Angeline b. 27 Apr 1841
      9. Horace b. Mar 1852
      10. Clarence M. b. Oct 1854
      11. Ned, b. Abt 1856
      12. Alvaretta May b. Abt 1858

Steven married Catherine Bennett. They lived and farmed in Clymer Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. He died on 22 May 1907 and is buried in the Clark Cemetery which records his birth and death date. They had two children, a boy and a girl.

      Nothing is known about Fanny.

Chester served in the Civil War. He came home with a sore leg which seems to have eventually been a factor in his death. He married Eliza Ann Decker and they had four children, two girls and two boys. He died May 6, 1878 and is buried in the cemetery at Sunderlinville.

Ruth married Bradley Hanes. They had two children, a boy and a girl. They lived in Sunderlinville where Bradley was a blacksmith. Ruth died 31 March 1901. Her burial site is unknown but is reported to be either in the Baker Cemetery or the Parker Hill Cemetery.

Erastus married three times, Lucy Ann Rogers, Mary Montgomery, and Eliza M Stevens. He had two children, one each with Lucy and Mary. He lived several different places but mostly close around the original farm. He is shown in an 1893 map as the owner 75 acres just west of Sunderlinville which is likely his father’s farm. He died on the 15th of June of 1910. He is buried in the Parker Hill Cemetery.

Angeline married Edward Dimon. They lived in Hector Township, Potter County for years then moved to Clymer Township of Tioga County, a distance of less than thirty miles. I believe she had at least three children but only one is identified in census records. Two others are identified by name but no dates in the West Beechwood Cemetery in Clymer. Angeline died in 1921 and is buried in the Ackley Cemetery.

Horace married Deborah Jane Longwell. They lived in Pike which is not that far from the original farm. This couple had seven children. When he died at the age of 84, he was living in Sunderlinville. Horace is buried in the Parker Hill Cemetery.

Clarence M Stiles has been previously identified as James but research shows that he was indeed Clarence M. He married Josephine Moore. They live in Harrison which is north and west of Sunderlinville about thirty miles. They had three boys. Their burial dates and place of internment is unknown at this writing.

Nothing is known about Ned Stiles.

Alvaretta married Charles Dimon. He was a brother of Edward, Angeline’s husband. They had two children, a girl and a boy. The girl has not been identified except in the 1880 Census. They lived in Pike, Hector, and Harrison. She died in 1921 and was buried in the Ackley Cemetery.

From these twelve children, Daniel and Matilda had at least twenty-three grandchildren. Horace was the only one with a large family, which would have been quite unusual for the time. Perhaps there were more grandchildren but they did not survive to be enumerated in the Census. It is interesting to note that all of them after marriage lived within thirty or forty miles of their parents.

Daniel died without a will on May 6, 1878. From the papers obtained from the Potter County Historical Society, it appears that Matilda did not probate the property right away. It is somewhat difficult to tell exactly what happened but it appears that she waited until the court ordered an executor identified at which time she signed over her rights to her son Erastus. Clarence, another son, was a witness to the document. Erastus then turned around the next day and declared that there was no personal property belonging to the estate.

In 1893, Erastus had 75 acres and Clarence held 100 acres of the original property. Other folks held about 250 acres between their farms. One could conclude that Clarence and Erastus acquired the property after the death of their father. A transfer of deeds in 1911 indicates that C M and Josephine Stiles sold 266 acres most of which is identified as family property. One could assume that Daniel and Matilda had acquired considerable land but it may have been in conjunction with some of the boys.

Daniel died May 6, 1878. Matilda survived him until at least the third of May in 1883 when she is described as being in poor health. This would make them both close to 70 years old at their time of death. I have been unable to determine where they were buried but I think that they would have been interred either in the Sunderlinville Cemetery which was close to their farm and where Chester is buried or the Parker Hill Cemetery. Parker Hill is on the hills west of Sunderlinville and a number of other family members are known to have been buried there.
