- BIOGRAPHY:
The Butz, Buttz, Butts family is very ancient. It had it had its origin with Otto Butz in 473 A.D. According to the Vienna book of Heraldry, the original ancestor was Brutus, who was taken as a prisoner of war to what is now Germany, in 160 A.D. There is no record of this family between this date and 473. The ancient records of "Butz back on the Rhein," the birthplace of the Butz ancestors who came to America are supposed to have been destroyed in the "Thirty Years' War." Early in the 18th century many inhabitants of the lower Palatinate lying on both sides of the Rhein in Germany were driven from their homes by the persecution of Louis XIV of France, whose armies desolated their country. Many of these fugitives went to England and there changed their names to Butts or Butt and some came directly to America. There were 7 ships of Palatinates who came to America between 1732 and 1754 of which a Buttz or Butts or Butz chartered the ships and was the Master. The Butts family coat of arms has been found. The information was taken from the family history of Lura Butts Dahl.
Elisha and Phoebe came to the US in 1731 with 4 children.
