  Source: Phebe Ann Campbell Bible Record: (older sister) Rosetta Campbell was born 7 June 1830. Her parents were John Campbell and Mercy Worden. Unfortuately, Rosetta has been confused with other Rosetta Charity Campbell's. This particular person was definately married to Joel Campbell. They crossed the plains with the Jesse Murphy Company in 1860. Joel had been married before and had other children, probably three. Joel died and Rosetta was sealed to Isaiah Campbell for time and also to Jonathan Love for time. ROSETTA CHARITY CAMPBELL Compiled by Margaret S. Loosle, 2017 Rosetta was born June 7, 1830, the ninth child of John Campbell and Mercy Worden. The family lived in Ridgebury Township, Bradford County, Pennsylvania. Her birth date is clearly recorded in her older sister’s bible. She was just barely two years old when her mother died at the birth of twins in 1832. The twins went to live with the neighbors and her father had to depend on the older siblings to take care of the younger ones. We can only imagine that life was hard. Their farm was in the rolling hills close to what is now Gillette, Pennsylvania. Her father was a lumberman and a cooper but they mostly just depended on a large garden, deer in the forest, a cow, and each other. She married Joel Campbell, her cousin, on May 28, 1846, when she was sixteen years old. Joel had been married before and was sixteen years older than Rosetta. On the 1850 census of Liberty, McKean Co., PA, the family is listed as Joel Campbell 36, Rosetta 20, Marion 12, Ann 9, and then Rosetta’s children, Jane 3, and Orson 2. Marion (Moroni) and Ann (Mary Ann) were Joel’s children from a previous marriage. They would go on to have four more boys, Reuben, Joel, Joseph and Jesse. Rosetta was baptized into The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints before she was married, 1 June 1845, when she was 15 years old. The Campbell family had been associated with the Church for some years probably as early as 1831. Her uncle Joel was selling out in 1836 to join the Saints in Ohio. Just when Rosetta and Joel started to move west is not known but by the spring of 1860 they were in Florence (Omaha), Nebraska, outfitted and ready to travel. According to the Journal History of the Church, Joel and Rosetta Campbell and their family arrived in Salt Lake City on August 30, 1860, as members of Capt. Jesse Murphy’s Ox Train Company. On June 30th of that year, this company was twelve days out of Florence, and consisted of 279 persons, 38 wagons, 2 carriages and about 225 head of stock. J. Eardly was Captain of guard; Paul Shettle, secretary; E. Murphy, chaplain; T. Stifox, B. J. Brown. J. Campbell, and H. Hogg, were captains of tens. This was reported in the Desert News on July 4, 1860. Also reported on that day were four other wagon companies, two merchant trains, and one handcart company bound for Utah. Emigration records show the Campbell family consisting of Joel (44), Rosetta (30), Clara J. (13), Owen J. (11), Reuben (8), Joel (6) Joseph (2). Also traveling with them was Joel’s son, Moroni (21) and his new bride, Leora Marjorie Talmage (15). It is believed that this couple had six children that lived to adulthood: Clarissa Jane, Orson Grant, Reuben Kent, Joel Jr., Joseph J, and Jesse M. Jesse was born on the plains somewhere between Nebraska and Utah. Joel (Sr.) died less than two years later on June 2, 1862, at North Ogden, Weber, Utah. Rosetta being left to care for herself and her children, including a two years old, would have to depend on her extended family to take care of her. Rosetta married (sealed for time) Isaiah Campbell on 20 December 1862. Isaiah was a first cousin and had been married previously to Rosetta’s older sister, Phebe Ann. Isaiah was already married to Susannah Garrard. On the 16th of November, she married Jonathan Love, Jr. Jonathan was already married and had five children. They all soon moved out to Park Valley, Utah, and took up farms. I suspect that Rosetta’s older boys were a big help in this effort and she would have been expected to cook, tend children, and help with the chores both inside and out. As far as I can determine, different church members were assigned to take care of widows and their children, as there were quite a few in this situation after traveling to Utah. Since Rosetta lived in at least two different households, we can only assume that this was her situation and she just had to do the best she could to survive. Rosetta is not found in the 1800 U S Federal Census. She was not living with the Love family. Her oldest daughter, Clara, is also missing from census records but Orson is married and living in Millard County, Utah. Reuben is living with Orson,s family. The three younger boys, Joel, Joseph, and Jesse have relocated near Mountain Home, Idaho, and are actively working in the mines. I have been unable to locate Rosetta after that 1870 Census. One family record claims that Rosetta died in 1887. This may be true but since she cannot be found in any documents after the 1970 census she may have passed away before 1880. Family members have confused her with other Rosetta Campbells who were born around the same time, so family records are not to be relied upon. Perhaps some obscure document will come to light as time goes on. She had at least 12 grandchildren and many other descendants.
