- Alice, daughter of Louis VII, King of France, by his second wife, Constance of Castile. In 1161, when she was still a child, she was betrothed to Richard, duke of Aquitaine (later Richard I of England), son of Henry II of England, and was held in wardship by the English King pending the marriage. Some sources hint that she was involved in a relationship with the king, but that is unlikely to be true. She was handed back to her brother, Philip II of France, in 1189, and Richard rejected her in 1190 in favour of Berengaria of Navarre. Philip then freed Richard from his 20-year oath to marry Alice, but only in return for 10,000 marks. In 1195 Alice was eventually married to William, count of Ponthieu. Ref. Robert I (11 July 1274 – 7 June 1329), popularly known as Robert the Bruce (Medieval Gaelic: Roibert a Briuis; modern Scottish Gaelic: Raibeart Bruis; Norman French: Robert de Brus or Robert de Bruys, Early Scots: Robert Brus), was King of Scots from 1306 until his death in 1329. Robert was one of the most famous warriors of his generation, and eventually led Scotland during the Wars of Scottish Independence against England. He fought successfully during his reign to regain Scotland's place as an independent nation and is today remembered in Scotland as a national hero.
