So shall it be with my father: he shall be
called a prince over his posterity, holding
the keys of the patriarchal priesthood over the kingdom of God on earth, even the Church
of the Latter Day Saints, and he shall sit in the general assembly of patriarchs, even in
council with the Ancient of Days when he shall sit and all the patriarchs with him and shall
enjoy his right and authority under the direction of the Ancient of Days.

    • BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH ABOUT WILLIAM STEVENS OR STEPHENS & MARY MEIGS
Nothing is known or at least can be proven about the origin of this William Stevens or Stephens, except that he came to New England with his father, John Steevens or Stephens, and siblings and was residing in Guilford, New Haven, CT by 1645. It is believed that he was born in about
1630 in an as yet unidentified locality in England and that his mother died before her husband and children emigrated to New England
An alleged ancestry for John Stephens or Steevens, father of this William Stevens, claiming that he was the son of Sir Edward Stephens and Annie his wife, sister of First Lord Crewe of Stene and that he was named for his uncle John, who was a Member of Parliament, and similar alleged ancestries are pure fantasies promulgated by C Ellis Stevens, who in 1904 privately printed the genealogy of his family, and by other careless genealogists of that era. These erroneous genealogies are still being published on Internet sites today. See more recent scholarship in "John Steevens of Guilford, Connecticut....," compiled by Claude W. Barlow [publication data in Source attached to this record] indicating that there is no evidence for any information about John Stephens or Steevens prior to the first records for him in Guilford, CT.
Dr. Barlow, at page 61 of his compilation indicates that William married (1) 3 March 1653/4 Mary Meigs (born at Weymouth,1633), daughter of John Meigs. She died in April 1703 [?]. Their children were:
      1. John born 3 March 1654/5,said to have been killed in King Philip's war, but no record has been found, save the service of his cousin (also John).
2, Samuel born March 1656/7 (Barbour) or 1 March 1657 (Holmes Genealogy)
      3. Nathaniel born 10 May 1659,died young
      4. Nathaniel born 29 Oct.1661
      5. Daniel probably died unmarried between 1695 & 1704 (see Guilford LR book 2 of Terriers, page 78 referred to in Dr. Barlow's book,p.14)
      6. Judith born 1 Oct.1668
      7. Josiah born 19 Dec.1670 (Barbour)or 8 Dec. (Gen.& Talcott)
      8. Mary (or Marcy in Barbour0 2 Nov.1677
William married at New London on 24 Nov.1703., Sarah (Hough) Carpenter, widow of David Carpenter. She died on
      20 Feb 1714/1715
Dr. Barlow points out that the birth record of the youngest daughter Mary in 1677 & the 2nd marriage in 1703 show that Mrs. Holmes was wrong( in her work publ.1906) when she stated that William's youngest child Mary was by his 2nd wife.
William died in Killingworth, Middlesex, CT on 26 Feb.1703/4 (date from inventory). Three deeds of William's survive & so does his will (New London probate #5155,recorded in book A, page 238).It was dated 23 February 1703/4 & received for probate on 30 March 1704.The date of death is given as 26 Feb 1703/4.
[INFORMATION FROM BARLOW'S COMPILATION WAS CONTRIBUTED TO ANCESTRY.COM BY "sharlastevens"]
William Stevens was a member of the church in Killingworth, CT in 1670. On 26 March 1671, he sold his land in Guilford to William Seward [probably the land received from his father, who died in 1670]. He was a respectable and trusted citizen.
