So shall it be with my father: he shall be
called a prince over his posterity, holding
the keys of the patriarchal priesthood over the kingdom of God on earth, even the Church
of the Latter Day Saints, and he shall sit in the general assembly of patriarchs, even in
council with the Ancient of Days when he shall sit and all the patriarchs with him and shall
enjoy his right and authority under the direction of the Ancient of Days.

    • Joseph Merriam , son of Joseph Merriam, was born in Hadlow, Kent, England, born about 1628, and came with his parents to America in 1638. He was admitted a freeman May 22, 1650. He married 12 July 1653, Sarah Stone, daughter of Gregory Stone, of Cambridge. He died 20 April 1677, aged 47 years, and his gravestone is the oldest in the Concord cemetery. His widow removed to Cambridge farms where she died April 5th, 1704 aged 71 years.

Joseph Merriam, eldest son of William Merriam, was probably born at Tudeley, Kent, England.about 1623 [this doesn't jive with the other dates; 1600 birth date is given elsewhere and makes more sense. Needs to be researched]. He married Sarah Goldstone, daughter of John and Frances Jefferie Goldstone.

(Robert Goldstone of Tonbridge, Kent, will dated 10 April 1637, proved 16 May 1637 was brother of Sarah Goldstone.)

Joseph with brothers, Robert and George and others mostly connected by marriage, charted a vessel called the "Castle" and sailed from the River of Thames for New England in April 1638. They arrived at Charlestown and Boston in July 1638 where the vessel lay at anchor several weeks with her passengers living on board. Besides the religious situation, there were economic causes for emigration to America.

Upon arrival in America, Joseph went almost immediately to Concord, where he settled at what ha s since been known as "Merriam's Corner" at the junction of the Concord-Bedford Roads. This point is now marked by an old tablet reading, "Merriam's Corner. The British troops retreated from the old North Bridge, were attacked in the flanks by the men of Concord and neighboring towns, and were driven under a hot fire to Charlestown."

The family lived there for many generations. Joseph died in Merriam's Corner January 1640-1, having lived in the New World only long enough to establish a home. Joseph Merriam, born probably Tudeley, England, married at Concord, 12 July 1653, Sarah Stone, baptized 8 February 1622\ 3 at Nayland, Suffolk, England.

Thomas Merriam, born 1672, married Mary Harwood of Concord, 23 December 1696. The record of his marriage speaks of him as of Cambridge, but Lexington at that time was a part of Cambridge and he was probably living there at the time of his marriage. He was a constable in 1716 and a selectman 1718, 22, 25. He died 16 August 1738, aged 66 and she died 29 September 1756, aged 81.

Thomas Merriam, baptized 21 April 1700, married Tabitha Stone. He died 4 June 1752; she 22 June 1760.

Mary Merriam, born 15 June 1727, married David Whitney of Walthan Massachusetts.
