Amanda Gowans Rollo was born in Angus, Scotland. She married William Rollo on November 29, 1854. The Rollo family was converted to Mormonism in Dundee and decided to move to America. Brigham Young had established an immigration fund to help Mormon converts. William left first aboard a steamship named "Minnesota", out of Liverpool, England on September 4, 1872. Amanda and the rest of the family followed on June 4, 1873 on Messieurs Gulon & Co.'s steamship "Nevada". According to the passage records, Amanda was 43 years old. Her children traveling with her were David - age 20, Peter - age 7, John - age 6, Alexander - age 4, and Andrew - infant. There were 246 Saints traveling on the ship. They arrived in New York, New York on June 16, 1873 in excellent health and spirits. They traveled by train to Salt Lake City and arrived on June 26, 1873.
The Rollos then went to Morgan, Utah where William started a grist mill. From there they went to Huntsville, to Nephi and then to Santaquin. William ran grist mills in all these places.
When William and Amanda grew old and could no longer do for themselves, Andrew and Alex who had migrated to Cedar City, took a wagon and team and moved them to Cedar City where Amanda died in 1898.
