- When possible, merge with KN3V-RWH It is important to note that no birth dates are provided; all birth dates are just suppositon taken from the context of the families.
"The History and Antiquities of the Parishes of Netherbury and Beminster, Dorset History" states: Thomas Gollop, of North Bowood, gent., styled of Bremley, Eliz. and of Strode later; ob. 7 Apr, Jac I. 1610, married Agnes, dau. of Humphrey Watkins, of Holwell, co, Somerset, esq; ob. 22 Jul 1604
Thomas Gallop of North Bowood, a gentleman, married Agnes, the daughter of Humphrey Watkins, of Holwell, co. Somerset, esq.; she died 22 Jul, 1604. His birth date is unknown--all birth dates at this period in time are conjecture based on relationships, property transfers, and few dates. He died April 7, 1610. He lived during the reign of Queen Elizabeth, which ended in 1603; her successor was James I. Thomas was, according to the family account, eldest son of John Gollop who died in the reign of Elizabeth, in 1562, as the Inquisition, and grandson of John, who married the daughter of Temple. He was educated at Milton Abbas among the religious. His father dying in his minority, he was ward to Sir Giles Strangways, and was possessed of Strode [also North Bowood, and Temple]. ("the History and Antiquities") (His birth year would have to be 1540-1544.)
The footnote reads, "He was, according to the family account, eldest son of John Gollop, who died during Queen Elizabeth 1562, as the Inquisition, and grandson of John, who married the daughter of Temple. He was educated at Milton Abbas among the religious. His father dying in his minority, he was ward to Sir Giles Strangways, and was possessed of Strode. His eldest son Giles was fellow of New College, Oxford, but, not consenting to the change of religion in Queen Elizabeth's time, he traveled through Spain to Rome, where he died. His father made nearly an equal distribution of his estate among his surviving sons, and died in during Jac. I (King James) in 1610.
Agnes could not have been born any earlier than 1555; she was still having children in 1605. The Antiquities source (taken from Visitations) states her eldest son Giles died in Rome in 1579. I wonder if that is an error because it throws off father Thomas Gollop's birth if his father died in his 'minority' in 1562. The year 1579 would be much more plausible as Giles' birth date, then mother Agnes having children still in 1605 would be reasonable.
Some only claim there were six children with Agnes Watkins (Gallup Genealogy 2009, Vol 1, xiv): (see NOTES) However, in "The History and Antiquities" source, more daughters are listed on the right side of the page, along with a footnote about husbands mentioned in the father's will. One daughter, probably Agnes, married HENRY WAY whose descendant emigrated to America on the Mary and John along with their son John Gallup. Some mix these daughters up with the family of Thomas Gollop and Frances Paulet, probably because they are listed to the right of his marriage, but they are on the same line as his parentage.
1. Giles Gallop died without issue. Fellow of New College Oxford, who not conforming to the change of religion in Queen Elizabeth's tiem, resigned his post and went to Rome and became a Jesuit priest.
2. Humphrey Gallop died without issue in 1598.
3. Thomas Gallop, died and was buried 2 Jan 1621. He was heir of North Bowood and Strode. He married Frances, the daughter of George Paulet, of Melplash, Dorsetshire, grand daughter of Thomas, son of the first Marquis of Winchester. Thomas and Frances had a son (1) Thomas Gollop of North Bowood and Strod, esq. and the Middle Temple, barrister-at-law, living in 1623; buried 2 July 1663. He married Martha, daughter of Ralph Ironside of Long Bridy, and Jane Gilbert of Oxford, only sister to Gilbert Ironside, D.D. Bishop of Bristol. (The record continues with their children Ralph, Thomas, and Martha, and on. Thomas and Frances also had (2) William, (3) Henry, who married a daughter of James Hill of Lyme Regis., and (4) Roger.
4. John Gallop married Mary Crabbe. Their son, John Gallop of Mosterne, age 33 in 1623, emigrated to America 1630 on the ship Mary & John.
5. George Gallop lived in Southampton, a member of the House of Commons, Mayor of Southampton. He had a son Humphry, no heirs.
6. Richard Gallop, Stoke Abbot, Dorsetshire; married Mary Davy,
daughter of John Davy of Stampford, Devonshire. They had children (1) John Gollop, son and heir, who married Elizabeth, daughter of Maximilian Mohun of Fleet, and Anne daughter of coheir of John Churchill; they had a son Capt. John Gollop. John and Elizabeth also had son Richard, buried 14 Oct 1631, and Maximilian. Richard and Mary also had (2) Giles, 2nd son, and (3) Humphry, bapt. June 1, 1608, and (4) Benjamin bapt. Jul 9, 1609, and (5) Mary, born 20 Mar 1600.
7. Thomas and Agnes also had a daughter Katharine, bapt. 17 Jun 1598, who married Thomas Game of Colhay, co. Dorset.
8. Anna, bapt. 7 Sep 1600, who married Robert Marshall of Chillington, co. Somerset.
9. Agnes.e
10. Elizabeth, bapt. 19 Dec 1602, age 18 in 1623.
11. Martha, bapt. Nov. 1605.
eThe Footnote reads, “One daughter was the wife of Henry Waye, perhaps Agnes; another the wife of John Hackwell, who is mentioned in the will of his grandfather, Thomas Gollop, 1607. Another son is mentioned in his will called Thomas Plucknett, probably a son-in-law."
