Birth: Dec. 10, 1642, Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts, USA
Death: Jul. 1, 1711, Rehoboth, Bristol County, Massachusetts, USA
Joanne was b. December 10, 1642 in Boston to George Harwood and Jane. Joanne m. Roger Amidon on December 27, 1668 after Roger's first wife Sarah died. With Roger, Joanne had:
• Philip b. January 26, 1669 (This is our descendant)
• Henry b. January 24, 1670
• Mehitabel b. August 27, 1672
If Philip's birth date was recorded correctly, Joanne was pregnant with him before Roger's wife Sarah died.
Also, there was an inquest into Roger Amidon's death which was signed off upon on November 11th. The inquest was allegedly done as Roger and Joanne had been arguing so intensely before his death that it was believed she had decided to permanently end the fighting.

Roger Amidon (1614 - 1673)*

There are many different spellings of Aimedoune, Ammidowne, Amidown, Amadon, Amidon, and others.
Roger Ammidown was the first of the Ammidown line to come to the Western Hemisphere.
Roger Ammidown was a Huguenot refugee from LaRochelle, France.
LaRochelle, Pointon, France is on the coast of the Bay of Biscay. The Aquitonian Lowlands have sandy beaches and lie along the coast. Inland the region has pine forests, rolling plains, and sand dunes. Its many vineyards supply grapes for the French wine industry.
LaRochelle is north along the coast from Bordeaux, a major seaport. Temperature above 39 degrees F; rain more than 39" a year, mainly pasture lands, sheep, and dairy products.
Huguenots, were a group of Protestants who became the center of political and religious quarrels in France in the 1500's and 1600's. The Huguenots believed the teachings of John Calvin and were members of the Reformed Church. The French Roman Catholics gave the group the name "Huguenots". There were many bitter feelings between Huguenots and the Catholics. There were even wars within the kingdom between the two groups.
In 1598 Henry IV issued the Edict of Nantes, which gave limited religious freedom to Protestants. The edict gave complete political freedom. The Huguenots thus formed a sort of Protestant republic within the Catholic kingdom. This was the time and place Roger Amidown was born and grew up.
The Edict of Nantes was repealed in 1685 and thousands of Huguenots fled from France. Roger Ammidown left France before this time and went to England, then came to the Western Hemisphere before this great exodus.
Roger Ammidown's name first appeared in the records of Salem, Massachusetts in 1637, where on the 25th day of the tenth month he was allotted half an acre of the march and meadow land. His name next appeared in 1640 at Weymouth when daughter Sara was born. His wife was also named Sarah. Three years later, in Boston, Lydia, born in 1643. They had three other children.
In 1643, a company went from Weymouth to form a settlement at Rehoboth and in 1648 Roger appears upon the records as being the 43rd name on the list of proprietors there. He lived in the part
of Rehoboth which afterward was known as Seekonk and he is referred to as "Goodman Amadowne". He was granted 50 acres of land on July 18, 1648. In 1657 Roger became a Freeman (this gave him the right to vote. It appears that Roger was in this country 20 years before he became a Freeman. I wonder if he was an indentured servant.) He received more land grants in 1658, 1662, 1665 and 1671 he received an additional grant of 100 acres. He first served on the coroner's jury in 1658—which he did several times later. His wife Sarah died on June 30, 1668 at Rehoboth.
On December 27, 1668, Roger married, another woman, Joannah Harwood, daughter of George and Jane Harvood, at Rehoboth. Joannah was born October 10, 1642. Together they had a son, Philip Amidon born January 26, 1669,127 and two other children; Ebenezer and
Hannah.
Roger Ammidown died or was buried November 13, 1673 at Rehoboth, Bristol, Massachusetts. Division of estate made 4 March Folg. To his Widow Joannah; son Ebenezer, by his representative John
Cobleck of Swansey; daughter Hannah, wife of Jeremiah Wheaton; John Harrod of Patncksett, brother of the widow, gave advice.
Joannah, Roger's wife, died July 1, 1711 at Rehoboth.
