Notes |
- All of the following was entered in 2015 by another. It has confused later entries and it is not clear if Thomas changed his name from James MacGregor to Thomas MackGehee or if he was possibly the son of James MacGregor. From the dates given as birth/death, it appears that Thomas is more likely to be the son of James MacGregor. If Thomas was born in Scotland and was a major in the army BEFORE immigration in 1650, he would have been born by or before 1630. This would have made him nearly 100 years old at death and made marriage to Mary Mumford/1688 or Ann Baytop/1699 at an old age. If he was the son of James MacGregor (who changed his name to MacGehee?), then he could have been born in 1653 as indicated. But, was he married to both women or just one of them? And, marriage dates for both of them make at least two children born before marriage. Also, is there confusion between the two William's? There is a record of William Mackgehee, son of Thomas, in the Register of St. Peter's Parish as baptized on 20 Oct 1689; and another record that a William Mackgehee sold land on 22 Jun 1696. These dates indicate that there were two William's of different ages.
"Thomas Mackgehee, alias James MacGregor.
Patrick MacGregor, chief of the MacGregor Clan, Scotland. His 2nd son, James MacGregor (Major, Scottish Army) came from Scotland to Virginia ca 1650; changed his name to Thomas McGehee, settled in St.John's Parish, King William County, Virginia; planter; married ca 1688 to Mary Mumford; will dated 1727. Their son, Edward McGehee, (will probated 1771) of Cumberland & Prince Edward Counties, Virginia, land owner of large estate; planter; married Elizabeth DeJarnette (daughter of Jean & Marie DeJarnette, Huguenot, from France to Gloucester County, Virginia, ca 1698."
Will of Thomas MacGregor (McGehee) MackGehee:
