- Ref: British 942 D2buf 1847 Burkes Landed Gentry - Lineage. The name of this family has not been exempted from the corruption in spelling which is to be traced in the records of many other houses. Their ancestor was the Norman Baron Taillefer, who accompanied William the Conqueror in his invasion of Great Britain, and of whom, Wace, the Anglo-Norman poet, speaks, in describing the Battle of Hastings, which took place on Saturday, 14 Oct 1056-- "Tallefer qui moult blen chantoit Sur un cheval qui tot alloit Devant eux alloit chantant De Kaleemagne et de Roland Et D'Oliver et des Vassals Qui moururent a Ronscevalles." Hanger Tayefer, his descendant, held lands in the tenure of Ospringe, County Kent, 39 Henry III. (A.D. 1256): from him we come to - John Taylor, of the Homestall, in Shadochurst, County Kent, living in the time of Edward III (died 1377 RIN 2417): he left sons, William and John, who, by virtue of the custom of gavelkind, had divers lands in Shadochurst, Great Chart, and Kingsnorth, which he left to his son, Thomas, of Great Chart. Probably Hanger Taylefer is the son of RIN 17216.
