Personal appearance: He was 5 feet 8 1/2, complection, light; color of eyes, gray blue; color of hair, dark brown He served as a Corporal from 12 August 1862 - to 10 June 1865 He was in Co. I, 89th Reg't Illinois Volunteers He enlisted as a Corporal on 12 August 1862. The regiment that he was enlisted in, 25 August 1862, according to the Database of Illinois Civil War Veterans was Company I, 89th Infantry, Rank of Corporal, and he enlisted in the town of Brooklyn (township) He was in the battle at Mission Ridge. In the Amboy Times, March 17, 1864, Page 2, Column 2: A Card of Thanks Camp Beatty, Marysville, Tenn, Feb 6th, 1864: We, the undersigned members of Co. I, 89th Reg't Ills. Vol., do hereby return our sincere thanks to the citizens of Melugins Grove and vicinity, for the very generous donations of tea, butter, paper and envelopes, aprons, &c., which reached us on the 27th of November, 1863, (the day after the battle of Mission Ridge.) We should ahve replied to it before, but circumstances over which we had no control, rendered it impossible. -- We were indeed proud of the present, and after the hard battle we laid aside our arms, and our worthy comrade in arms, Z. Melugins, officated as distrubting agent, and gave to all. God bless the donors, both old and young is the earnest wish of the undersigned, Three cheers for the citizens of Melugin's Grove and the union. -- It was signed by man men including James S. Quince James S. "musters out" 10 June 1865 in Nashville, Tennessee.
