So shall it be with my father: he shall be
called a prince over his posterity, holding
the keys of the patriarchal priesthood over the kingdom of God on earth, even the Church
of the Latter Day Saints, and he shall sit in the general assembly of patriarchs, even in
council with the Ancient of Days when he shall sit and all the patriarchs with him and shall
enjoy his right and authority under the direction of the Ancient of Days.

    Notes
    • This is the very same day he married my grandmother, Hannah Johnson. They were married in Provo by bishop Turley once the divorce was granted after petitions of my grandfather with repeated hearings as stated in the court record. In the history written by Ralph Gibbs Smith, Martha Sophia Robey ran away shortly after their marriage. She gave birth in one of the Utah mining towns to a son conceived before she and John ever met. She was pregnant by another man before they ever met and were married.

  • Notes
    • At about age 19, John met a girl at the old Mozart Dance Hall in Provo. Her name was [Martha] Sophia Robey. She was dark eyed and beautiful, and John quickly became infatuated with her. They married soon after meeting, and after their marriage John discovered that she was pregnant by another man. John and Sofia, at the pleading of her mother, lived as man and wife until the child was born at which time they divorced. [Evaline Smith, John’s sister told Bonnie Decker that Sofia lied and tricked John into marrying her. The Salt Lake Herald newspaper in 1903 published marriage license information that states that John was 26 and Sophia was 18. If the information in the LDS church genealogical databases is correct, John was actually 19 and Sophia, born in July 1889 in Vernal, Utah, was only 13 when they were married in March 1903. The comment by Eveline Smith that Sophia ran away after the marriage contradicts Ralph Smith's statement that they agreed to live together at the pleading of her mother until after the child was born.] The child, a boy, retained the name of Sidney Smith and lived and worked in Salt Lake City. [The birth record for Sidney Smith states that he was born in Highland Bay, Bingham Canyon, Utah. Ora Haws Vance said her mother, Evaline Smith Haws, told that Sophia ran away shortly after the marriage, apparently to Bingham Canyon, and she was not heard from. Highland Bay was a cluster of homes near the mine in Bingham Canyon, Utah. There was a protestant-run home for girls in Highland Bay sponsored by a non-LDS, religious organization. It is possible that this home is where she went for the birth of the child. Sophia could never be found and did not respond to the divorce petitions of John Smith. A divorce of John from Sophia was granted in the Fourth District Court for Utah County on May 10, 1909 the very day that John married his second wife, Hannah Johnson.] At one time Sidney Smith came to see John when he was a desk sergeant on the Salt Lake City police force asking him for money and called John "father." John said to him, “I am not your father. You go ask your mother to tell you the name of your real father, [and you ask him for money].” It is not known if he ever did. Sidney Smith was reared a catholic, [served in the US Navy], and his death notice appeared in the Salt Lake newspapers a few years ago. Sidney Smith married and had a son who goes by the name of Smith. - Ralph Gibbs Smith
