Etta Ethel Bischoff was the 7th of 12 children born to Albert Frederick Bischoff and Janet Rebecca Anderson Bischoff. She was born in Lovell, Wyoming on 12 Apr 1909. Her childhood was spent in Wyoming, Idaho, and Nevada. She went to nurse's training in Salt Lake City, Utah and became a nurse prior to 1932. She went to California to help family members. There she met and married Arthur George Pan, an immigrant from Greece, on 17 Dec 1932 in Long Beach, California. They lived in the Los Angeles area. They had 3 daughters: Pauline, born 3 Sep 1933; Lorraine, born 3 Jan 1935; and Louise, born 10 Mar 1938. They bought a house and lived in West Los Angeles at 2537 Bentley Ave. Art developed a brain tumor and died on 13 Apr 1940. It was the day after Etta's 31st birthday. Her father told her she should remarry and not remain single. She knew Maurice Rees and his family and her sister was married to his brother. Maurice was a widower with no children. They started dating and were married in Las Vegas, Nevada on 17 Oct 1940. They had two more children, making a family of 5 children. John Maurice was born 22 May 1942 and Helen Janet was born 15 Feb 1944. Etta was daesirous that all her children have the same last name and Maurice legally adopted the three girls before John was born. The family was sealed together in 1952. Pauline was sealed 24 Jun 1952 and the rest of the children on 4 Aug 1952, all in the Mesa Temple.Maurice and Etta moved from Los Angeles to Palmdale, California in 1960. They helped build the first LDS chapel in that city and were very active in furthering the gospel. Etta served in many callings, twice being Relief Society president. She was locally know as the 'rose lady' for the beautiful roses she grew and generously shared with everyone. She had over 100 rose bushes in her yeard and nearly as many miniature rose bushes. Etta and Maurice helped their children when needed and often cared for grandchildren. Maurice died in Palmdale on 23 May 1977. Etta lived another 26 years alone, helping many family and church members during that time. She died in Lancaster, California at an assisted care facility on 30 Apr 2003.
Sister Rees sent me a card after we left California. She wrote about her family coming to visit in March of 1994 and two of her daughters helping to tie 2 king size quilts. Etta loved her roses and was looking forward to sharing them with friends and neighbors. That year the lilacs and roses were both very plentiful. She was thinking about what to plant in her vegetable garden "food items" she wrote, so maybe she had some berries or fruit trees in mind as well. She was looking forward to 2 weddings in the coming year, one in Idaho and one in California. I surely enjoyed her visits and felt very grateful to have such kind ladies take me into their hearts. We only lived in Palmdale for a year.
