So shall it be with my father: he shall be
called a prince over his posterity, holding
the keys of the patriarchal priesthood over the kingdom of God on earth, even the Church
of the Latter Day Saints, and he shall sit in the general assembly of patriarchs, even in
council with the Ancient of Days when he shall sit and all the patriarchs with him and shall
enjoy his right and authority under the direction of the Ancient of Days.

THE JAMES DE POTTY (DE PARTY OR DE PARTEE) FAMILY
(From the book, History of Bristol, Clausen, Cambron and Families, by Pat Bird Sagers)

(*NOTE: Some corrections were made since the book was published)

      Chapter 39

James DePotty was born about 1826-1827 at Niagara, Ontario, Canada. It is not known what the relationship of James is to Elizabeth DePotty, but he may be a younger brother. If so, he would have been the last child born to Michael and Mary DePotty, and may not have been born before Michael died - prior to February 1826. However, there were several other DePotty families listed on the Niagara Military Records, and they were most likely closely related to Michael, so James may have been a cousin to Elizabeth. Since the families of James and Elizabeth were so close to one another, the author decided to add this chapter, with hopes that someday more positive identification will be found.

James married Mary Ann Sly, daughter of Margaret Jane Fuller and step-daughter of James Calvin Sly. Mary Ann was born about 1826-1827, also in the province of Niagara, Ontario, Canada. Shortly after their marriage, about 1844-1846, Mary Ann’s father and mother (the Sly’s) joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and left their homeland of Canada and traveled to Nauvoo, Illinois to be near the main body of the Church, and apparently Mary Ann and James also joined the Church - at least they also move with Mary Ann's parents - the Sly's.

Mary Ann and James were living near Council Bluffs, Iowa when their first two sons were born. Joseph Calvin was born 8 Oct 1844, and James Christopher was born 6 Oct 1847. About this time James Sly joins the Mormon Battalion (along with all other available Mormon men) and marches to California, while his wife remains behind and apparently is cared for by her daughter, Mary Ann, and son-in-law, James DePotty.

James DePotty then moves his family to Rockport, Missouri about 1848, and continues farming. They are found at Rockport on the 1850 Federal Census as James DePotty, age 22, birthplace: Canada; Mary A., age 22, birthplace: Canada. Their two sons: Joseph, age 3; and James age 1 were both born in Missouri (actually Iowa). It was in Rockport that James and Mary Ann’s last two children were born - Elizabeth Lodemia was born 18 April 1851, and Mary Angeline was born in 1852.

The “History of North Idaho” states that James served in the Civil War. Sometime in the 1850's he leaves his family behind also, and travels to California - perhaps looking for gold. In 1861 he joins the California 1st Calvary. The following is part of his Military Records as was obtained by his great-great granddaughter, Emma Rohrbach:
“James was a PVT 1, California Cavalryman in Company’s D and B Regiment. He went into service at Camp Merchant in Yuba City, in 1861. He is listed on the Muster Rolls as 34 years 5'6", light complexion, gray eyes, brown hair, born at Niagara Co., N.Y. [Canada?], farmer. Enlisted September 9, 1861, Marysville Co., by Lt. Col. Davis In 1862 he helped take confederate prisoners to San Antonio, Texas. He then went to Fort Craig, New Mexico and was absent from there from November 1863 to April 1864, and appears to have served with Co. B. In the gold mines, and later as a scout. He again enlisted October 27, 1864 at Santa Fe, New Mexico for 3 more years. He mustered out, September 10, 1866 at Fort Union, New Mexico.”

It’s not known why James chose to stay away from his family and serve in the army for so many years. He may have visited them in Utah during his periods of absence.

Sometime prior to 1860 Jane Sly’s two brothers, Daniel and Christopher Fuller, and Christopher’s family leave their farms in Canada and join Jane and Mary Ann and her children in Rockport, Missouri. Daniel appears to take over his sister’s and niece’s farm and cares for and supports them. Christopher and his family are living nearby.

The Fullers and DePotty families stay in Rockport and work and farm there for at least two years, until they are able to outfit and finance the trip across the plains for the whole family - which they did in 1862. After arriving in the Salt Lake Valley, they all go farther south to Nephi, Utah and join another family member - the Mary Maria Fuller and Daniel Cook family.

On the 1870 Federal Census, Joseph and James DePotty, Jr. (spelled Defrotty on the Census) are now both married. Joseph married Mary Jane Holden, and their family is living with his aged Uncle Daniel Fuller, age 77, (who is now listed as a Physician), and also his mother, Mary Ann Sly DePotty, age 37 [40], and born in Upper Canada. And, Joseph’s sister, Mary Angeline, who is listed as age 17, and born in Missouri.

James C. DePotty, Jr. Is living in another house with his wife, Elizabeth Holden (sister to Mary Jane Holden - Joseph’s wife). Margaret ‘Jane’ Fuller Sly is not listed on the 1870 Census since she died 19 March 1869.

Sometime in 1874, James DePotty, Jr. Moves his family to Idaho; and a couple years later, about 1876, Joseph DePotty and his family also move, but they go on up to the state of Washington. However, on the 1880 Census, the two DePotty brothers are listed in a little town called Forty, and James is a blacksmith and Joseph is a miner. Their mother, Mary is listed in James’ household as a widow, age 52 years, born in Canada and she is also listed in Joseph’s household as Mary A, age 50, widow, and born in Canada. Mary Ann probably took turns living with both her sons. Yet on the June 6, 1887 Juab County Court records under the heading of Territorial Insane Asylum for board, attendance and treatment of paupers and insane was listed Mary Ann and Elizabeth DePotty. They most likely were paupers or working for their board, as “treatment” was not listed by their names, and Elizabeth marries soon after this.

It is not known why James DePotty, Sr. Chose to stay away from his family and serve in the army for so many years; and it’s not known if he visited or supported his family financially, especially since they had moved to the western states and were nearer to him. Emma Rohrbach, his great-great granddaughter, found record of James at Apache Springs Village, San Miguel, New Mexico in 1870. The History of North Idaho states that James was in Arizona when he was ambushed and killed by Mexican bushwhackers. Apparently he kept in touch with his family, as they received this news of his death. The exact date is unknown. The death date and place for Mary Ann Sly DePotty is also unknown, but was after 1887, and probably in Nephi, Utah.

      NOTE:
The Nephi, Juab County, Utah Burial Records lists, under:
      “Departy ________ Jane born __________ in Canada. Died 29 January 1890. c.c. pg 1"
The author of this book [Pat Sagers] is still puzzled as to whom this Jane is who was born in Canada, and buried in Nephi, Utah. The records in which this information was obtained was typed years later from the original records, so there is the possibility that the name is not accurate. This may have been Mary Ann Sly DePotty (dau of Jane), especially since the name was listed under her daughter (Elizabeth’s) records.

Also from about September 1888 until her death in 1890, she is listed only as "Mrs. Departee", and as a Pauper, and is cared for by the City of Nephi. I believe this is most likely Mary Ann Sly DePartee - daughter of Margaret Jane Fuller Sly. She may have had dementia and nobody around to care for her.

MARGARET ‘JANE’ FULLER SLY - and JAMES CALVIN SLY

Margaret Jane was married to James Calvin Sly, and he later became a polygamist. They had a child in Canada, which died at a young age. Margaret also had a daughter, that was 3 or 4 years old when she married James, and she grew up with the Sly surname and referred to him as her father. Margaret was called "Aunt Jane Sly" by children from James Calvin Sly's other wives. In James Calvin Sly's diary he mentions:"1850 2 Oct. James C. Sly visited Aunt Jane Sly on first day in Rock Creek" (It is believed that Aunt Jane Sly who was living with the Fuller brothers, is Margriet J. (Jane) Fuller, second wife of James Calvin Sly. It's not known if they actually divorced, but they never lived together after James took two other sisters as his wives.

According to a Journal of Martha Spence Heywood (1850 - 1856), pg. 44, she wrote: "Last Sabath Mr. Holden was baptized for his health, also Bro. Sly who was cut off the Church about two months ago...." (He may have been "cut off" from the Church for entering plural marriage without permission.)

      Mary Ann was born about 3 or 4 years prior to Margaret Jane Fuller's marriage to James C. Sly;
