So shall it be with my father: he shall be
called a prince over his posterity, holding
the keys of the patriarchal priesthood over the kingdom of God on earth, even the Church
of the Latter Day Saints, and he shall sit in the general assembly of patriarchs, even in
council with the Ancient of Days when he shall sit and all the patriarchs with him and shall
enjoy his right and authority under the direction of the Ancient of Days.

    • JOEL CAMPBELL AND NANCY LEONARD

Joel Campbell was the third son of Samuel Campbell and Mary Hunter. He was born on the 22 Jan. 1735 in Boston, Sulfolk Co., Mass. He was married to Nancy Leonard about 1754. She was born on the 15 of June 1737 in Otsego, Otsego Co., New York.

They had at least six children, 5 boys and 1 girl. Jonathan, our ancestor was the fourth child.

In the 1790 census of Montgomery City, Orange County, New York, it states Joel Campbell having 3 males over 16 and 3 females over 16.

In the 1800 Census of Orange Co, New York, Joel Campbell is listed as having 1 male over 45 and 1 female over 45, in his household. Joel is said to have a second wife, Rebecca.

From the book, The Ridgeway Story, it states, “Joel Campbell came to Bradford Co., Pennsylvania in 1805. (Joel was 70 years old.) It mentions that his family consisted of seven boys, Joshua, Ezekiel, Joel, Jonathan, Nathaniel, Benoni, and William. (The names of six of these sons are the grandsons of Joel, sons of Jonathan.) They came from Manniscotton, Orange Co., New York. They came in with ox teams and drove several cows in with them. They made their first settlement on Bentley Creek about one mile from the State Line. The Campbell’s moved away about 1829, rumor says they became Mormons and some of them went west with Joseph Smith.” .

In the story written by Miranda Campbell Stringham, family stories have told that Joel and Nancy Campbell joined a crowd of people that started to go west. West, at this time, was western Pennsylvania. In 1805,his son, Jonathan, was married and had nine children. There were several families of Campbell’s that came west in this group.

Nancy had died 1790. Joel died in Orange County, New York on 15 Jan 1828.
