Notes |
- In Denmark, he was christened 'Ole Carl Christian Clausen or Jensen', however, he became known as "Charles C. Clausen or Clawson" after he arrived in America. The family names seem to be spelled "Clauson" or "Clawson". He came to Utah with his mother after joining the LDS Church, around July 1870. They sailed from Hamburg, Germany. He married (1) Emma Sophia Peterson (Smith), and they had three children, and divorced. He married (2) Eliza Ann Davis, 1 Jan 1888, and they had 16 children--the last two were a set of stillborn twins.
nattak2002 says: "His son's Death Certificate lists fathers birthplace as Germany. The Undertaker is Charles Clauson of Elmo." (Oct 27, 2015)
Pat Sagers I know - and I've seen that several times. The only thing that I can figure out about where Germany comes from, instead of Denmark, is that when his parents divorced, they went over to Germany. His sister, Ane Clausen, was sent to Utah alone, as an 11 year old, in 1862. Charles was still young when they went to Germany, and I believe that Charles and his mother stayed in Germany until they could afford to come to Utah in 1871. Germany may have been all that he remembered? That's my theory!
