      Martha Cartwright Crowther was born, July 27, 1766, in the parish of Madeley, Shropshire, which is between ten and fifteen miles north and east from Cardington. Madeley is a market town and is also known as Madeley-Market. It had 5,297 inhabitants in 1831. It is situated between two rivers. This is the area of the most extensive iron works in England, with great foundries and furnaces located in the general vicinity. The parish church is dedicated to all Saints.
      Martha Cartwright Crowther was the mother of eight children, three sons and five daughters all born in the parish of Cardington. She was buried at Madeley, June 7, 1835, following her death at the age of 70 years.
