- Obituary: Nathan Reed Ballard 1980 ~ 2004 Our beloved husband, son, brother, grandson and great friend, Nate Ballard, 23, returned to his Heavenly Father after a tragic accident that occurred while he was doing what he loved best: flying a plane. The accident happened while Nate was performing his multiengine certification examination near Cedar City, Utah, on January 12, 2004. Born on Oct. 5, 1980, on a beautiful Sunday, to Clark Russell and Leanna Spjut Ballard, Nate attended Millville and Edith Bowen Elementary Schools before his family moved to Alpine. He attained the rank of Eagle Scout at age 16. He graduated from Sehome High School in Bellingham, Washington in 1999, after completing a full year worth of college credit at Whatcom Community College and Bellingham Technical College in the Running Start Program. During the summer of 1999, Nate worked very hard earning every penny to pay for flying lessons and plane rentals. He earned his private pilot license before leaving on his LDS mission. Nate was an outstanding missionary in the Vilnius, Lithuania LDS mission, 1999-2001, where he served as Zone Leader and Assistant to the President. Upon his return, Nathan enrolled in the Aeronautical Science program at Utah Valley State College, earning his Instrument Flight Rating on 08/01/02 and his Commercial Single Engine license on 05/02/03. Nate planned to graduate from the program, with his Bachelor of Science degree, Dec. 2004. He planned to be a commercial pilot and had logged over 250 hours of flying time. An extremely hard worker, Nate was employed full-time at Invest Tools, in technology support, in Provo and was taking 20 winter semester hours at UVSC. Nate was an avid pilot, skier, mountain climber and spelunker. He lived life very fully and joyfully. Nathan married his eternal sweetheart, Jennifer Susan Fisher, Sept. 27, 2003, in the Salt Lake Temple, sealed for time and eternity by his grandfather, Elder M. Russell Ballard of the Quorum of the Twelve. He served as the 11-year-old Scout leader in the Bonneville 7th ward, in Provo. Nate is survived by his wife, Jenn; parents Clark and Leanna Spjut Ballard of Millville, Utah, and in-laws Kennan and Susan Fisher of Corona del Mar, CA; brothers Matt (Alina) of West Jordan, Trevor and Tommy of Millville, sister Melissa of Orem; grandparents Elder M. Russell and Barbara Ballard of Salt Lake City and step-grandmother Kay Ensign Spjut; nieces Anabelle and Katelyn Ballard; sisters-in-law Lindsay Fisher, Alice Griffith, Elizabeth Wilhoit, Gina Simmons; and brother-in-law Gary Fisher; numerous cousins, aunts and uncles and many close friends. Preceded in death by grandparents Reed and Gloria Spjut, sister Sara Ballard, and uncle Scott Spjut. Funeral services will be held Saturday, Jan. 17th, at 11:00 a.m. at the Millville Ward church, 110 So. Main, Millville, Utah. Friends may call 9:30 10:45 a.m. on Saturday, prior to the service.
