So shall it be with my father: he shall be
called a prince over his posterity, holding
the keys of the patriarchal priesthood over the kingdom of God on earth, even the Church
of the Latter Day Saints, and he shall sit in the general assembly of patriarchs, even in
council with the Ancient of Days when he shall sit and all the patriarchs with him and shall
enjoy his right and authority under the direction of the Ancient of Days.

  • Notes
    • MARR DATE 1089 DIV He went on Crusade in 1101, which "was a major disaster." While crossing Anatolia most of the army he had raised was massacred in an ambush. In 1120 he was more successful in a crusade he went on in Spain. At home his devious efforts to increase his holdings resulted in persistent local warfare and conflict with the church. His flagrant adultery and open devotion to promiscuity led him into further conflict with the church, and he was excommunicated in 1114. He was most famous for being a poet. He is the first of the troubadours whose works have come down to us, the first poet in whom we find evidence of the "courtly love" tradition that soon dominated Western literature. He also has had the most appeal to modern audiences. He was apparently noted for his charm and charisma and took delight in entertaining others with jokes, comic acting, and the performance of his own sons. He became famous for attacking the church and sang of how he planned to set up an Abbey of Whores in which various known prostitutes would hold positions of authority. Because of an affair with Maubergeonne, Viscountess of Chatellerault, he had a conflict with Peter, Bishop of Poitiers, William seized Peter by the hair and, waving his drawn sword, threatened to kill him. Peter, seeking martyrdom, invited William to do so. William, in turn, changed his mind and declined to help the bishop on his way to heaven. Later, he threw Peter into prison, and when the bishop died there William joked that he'd helped the bishop get to heaven after all. His poems, eleven of which survive, were chronicles and burlesque. Both reflect deliberate defiance of the church's teachings in favor of the delights of amorous adventures. His burlesque poems dealt with sex within the context of social values, and were often obscene. He died in 1126. SUFFIX: Also shown as VII, IX, Duke BIRTH: Also shown as Born , , Aquitaine, France.
