So shall it be with my father: he shall be
called a prince over his posterity, holding
the keys of the patriarchal priesthood over the kingdom of God on earth, even the Church
of the Latter Day Saints, and he shall sit in the general assembly of patriarchs, even in
council with the Ancient of Days when he shall sit and all the patriarchs with him and shall
enjoy his right and authority under the direction of the Ancient of Days.

    • Symon Tuttle, father of the 1635 immigrant brothers Richard, John and William Tuttle to Massachusetts, d. testate and was bur. June 15, 1630 at Ringstead, Northampton, England.

According to a parish burial record provided by a descendant, "Simon Tootell" is interred at the churchyard of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary at Ringstead. Unfortunately, after posting a photo request a volunteer at Ringstead reported:

      • I searched the entire cemetery and could not find the grave. There are quite a lot of worn and illegible markers, although in total there are not that many markers, which was surprising. The area to the South of the church is very, very overgrown but I do not think the grave you seek would be there. I looked for a guide book in the church but found nothing. It could be that somebody with historical knowledge of the church knows where this grave is...

      More later...

The present focus of this memorial is Simon's three sons who emigrated together with their families as passengers of the "Planter" to New England in April 1635:

      • i. Richard Tuttle, b. circa 1582, d. May 8, 1640 at Boston, Mass.; m. June 19, 1622 at Barnwell St. Andrew, Northampton, Eng., Ann Taylor; four children of the marriage; emigrated to New England with their three surviving children (Hannah, John and Rebecca) along with Richard's widowed mother Isabel also listed with the family.

      • ii. John Tuttle, b. circa 1596, d. Dec. 30, 1656 at Carrickfergus, 11 miles north of Belfast, county Antrim, Northern Ireland; m. by early 1628 the widow Joan (Antrobus) Lawrence; five children of the marriage; emigrated to New England with their four eldest children (Abigail, Simon, Sarah and John) along with Joan's five surviving children by her first husband (Jane and her husband George Giddings,[*1] John, Thomas,[*1] William and Marie Lawrence) along with Joan's widowed mother Joan (Arnold) Antrobus also listed with this family.

      • iii. William Tuttle, bapt. Dec. 26, 1607, d. suddenly in June 1673 at New Haven, Conn.; m. by early 1631 Elizabeth, who with their three eldest children (John, Ann and Thomas) emigrated to New England. Twelve children of the family, the nine youngest b. in New England.

[*1] George Giddings and his wife Jane Lawrence are on the same list but in a different location; Joan's son Thomas, then 15 years of age, is not listed but assumed to be an error by the port scribe.

      SYMON TOOTILL and ISABEL WELLS

Symon Tootill, of Woodford, Northamptonshire, England, was a grown man, but not yet married, at the date of the will of his father, Richard Tootill, in 1589. By that document he was left in charge of rather extensive farms, and also the responsibility of the needs of his mother. Symon married within the next few years, his wife being Isabel Wells, and to them came several children.
In January 1617/18 Isabel's father, John Wells, gave generous legacies of land (at Ringstead, Northamptonshire, where he lived), cattle, and goods to Isabel's children Richard, Thomas, Simon, and William. He even gave amounts to three of Symon's and Isabel's servants. Isabel was, apparently, the second daughter in her family. Her (older) sister was named first in the will and received the "best" of various items. Isabel, mentioned second, received from her father "my second bedstede my second fetherbede & all the second furniture for that bede my third & fourth chars my rede coffer six of the next pares of pewtrye second candlestick my best table cloth & my best salt."
Symon's will is dated 19 December 1627, and the family was then living in Ringstead, which had been their residence for at least twenty years. Symon called himself a yeoman, or farmer of his own land. From the will we learn that he owned a fair amount of property. Among his children he gave the largest legacy to his youngest son William, which indicates that he had already given generously to the older sons. Son Thomas is mentioned as deceased; son Simon is not named, though believed to be the Simon Tootill who married twice and lived at Burton Latimer (however, that Simon could have been a nephew); the "eldest sonne Richard" was to receive an acre of land and "half a dusson sheepe"; "second sonne John" was given a dwellinghouse, a meadow, thirty pounds, and five pounds for his daughter Abigail.
The major concerns Symon had, when preparing his will, were his wife Isabel and, as mentioned, his son William. He provided that Isabel should have "All that Moytie or pcell of land . . . wch ys
Due to me out of the land formrly conveyed to my eldest sonne Richard and the house messuage or tentwherein I now dwell, together wi th all the houses, yardes, Landes meadowes pastures comons . . . and appurtenaunces whatsoevr thereunto belonging, and also . . . lands . . . wch I lately purchased of Thomas Holding Edward Appan[?] als James and of Willm Lillyman . . . for . . . terme of her natural life . . . after her naturall death . . . unto Willm Tuttell my youngest sonne . . . his heires . . . for want of such issue to the second sonne of my sonne Richard." Additionally, Isabel was to have one half "of a meadow purchased of Joane Bateman wydowe . . . other half to son Wm." William was also bequeathed "twentie poundes given to him by his grandfather John Wells in and by his last will and testament . . . five poundes wch fell to him by the death of his brother Thomas Tuttell . . . my best bedsted wth the bedding and furniture thereunto belonging, or therewthused, the table in the hall wth the frame halfe a dusson of frame stooles, the yron barres in the Chimneys with the hookes and hangings, the bed wherein he lyeth, my best brasse pan, my best brasse pott, my maultmill as now yt standeth, my bolting panne, and hoolding fatt, the barre of yron and the packaye[?] And I will that all my sheepe be equally devided betweene my said wyffe and my saide sonne Willm wth the increase thereof so long as he . . . unmarried . . . sonne Willm my great cubbord in the [torn], the greater chest, two of the biggest chaines, and the chest that standeth by his bedside." Symon requested that the "moveable goodes . . . given to my sonne Wi11m . . . to remaine in the house during the natural life of my said wyfe," and desired that William would care for his mother.
Additionally, Symon remembered the poor of Ringstead, his god-children, and his grandchildren. He lived two and a half years after the date of his will, being buried at Ringstead 15 June 1630.
Three of the sons, Richard, John, and William, with their families, emigrated to New England, sailing on the “Planter” 2 April 1635. Mother Isabel accompanied them, being on the pasenger list as aged seventy.
