So shall it be with my father: he shall be
called a prince over his posterity, holding
the keys of the patriarchal priesthood over the kingdom of God on earth, even the Church
of the Latter Day Saints, and he shall sit in the general assembly of patriarchs, even in
council with the Ancient of Days when he shall sit and all the patriarchs with him and shall
enjoy his right and authority under the direction of the Ancient of Days.

    • Josiah or Josias Churchill as he spelled his name, was born 1 Jan 1613 in Muston, Dorset, England (see The History of Ancient Wethersfield" Vol 2, p. 220 ). Josiah came to America as a sailor from England about midyear 1635. He was in Wethersfield early but not among the first settlers.

"Wethersfield is generally considered to be the first permanent English settlement in Connecticut." Explored in 1633 by a party consisting of John Oldham and three others; Wethersfield was settled the next year. Oldham and nine others formed a group known as the 10 original settlers.

They were soon joined by a party of 60 men, women and children who made the arduous overland voyage in the early fall of 1635. In 1637 Josiah was listed as a soldier in the latter part of the Pequat Indian War.

In 1638 he married Elizabeth Foote in Wethersfield, Hartford county, Connecticut, daughter of Nathaniel Foote and Elizabeth Deming who were among the 10 original founders of Wethersfield.
