    • Robert Royce was born 1605 Martock, Somerset, England. The name is spelled Royce, Roice and Rice.
      In 1630 John Winthrop organized a fleet of 11 ships to carry immigrants from England to America. Departing in two groups in April and May, they arrived at various dates in June and July. These ships were: Ambrose, Arbella, Charles, Hopewell, Jewel, Mayflower, Success, Talbot, Trial, Whale and William & Francis.
      Robert and Elizabeth Royse (Ryse) came to Boston in the British Colony of Massachusetts on the ship "Francis" with this fleet.
      In Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts in 1631 Robert was number 137 on church list of 1630..
      Robert was admitted a Freeman in Boston on 1 April 1634.
      The family had moved by 1644 to the Colony of Connecticut , now Stratford, Fairfield County, Connecticut. By 1657 the family moved to New London, New London County, Connecticut. Robert was listed among the first sixteen members of the New London Church. He had a lot on Post Hill. He was a shoemaker. He served as Constable, Townsman, Robert was very active in the community, a Constable in 1660 and a member of the General Assembly in 1661, 1667 and 1669.
      In 1663 Robert was granted land by the town to settle his sons Samuel and Nathaniel. In 1667 he was appointed to keep an ordinary, and was freed from training, probably because of his age.
      Robert died on 22 September 1676 in New London, leaving a widow, Mary Sims. Robert left an unsigned will with an estate of four hundred twenty Pounds per the inventory of 22 September 1676 The children sharing in the distribution of his estate were: Joshua, Nathaniel, Patience, Ruth, Sarah, Nehemiah, Samuel, Isaac and Jonathan.
      Four of the five sons of Robert Royce moved to Wallingford, New Haven County, Connecticut. Mary continued to live in the Post Hill homestead. On 4 February 1688 Mary signed an agreement consenting to the sale of the property of which she had life use.
      Mary died intestate 4 July 1697 in Wallingford, New Haven County, Connecticut , where on 14 July 1697 her son, Samuel, was granted administration of her estate. Inventory of his estate was presented 22 September 1676.
