So shall it be with my father: he shall be
called a prince over his posterity, holding
the keys of the patriarchal priesthood over the kingdom of God on earth, even the Church
of the Latter Day Saints, and he shall sit in the general assembly of patriarchs, even in
council with the Ancient of Days when he shall sit and all the patriarchs with him and shall
enjoy his right and authority under the direction of the Ancient of Days.

  • Notes
    • Old colonial records show this name spelled Spinage, Spenning, Spining, and the more modern Spinning.

      I. Humphrey SPINNING was an early settler at New Haven, being recorded there as early as 4 December 1639.[1] He was evidently a man of enterprise, and is known to have owned lands on Delaware Bay, and at Oyster Bay, besides money in the hands of John Brown, of Salem.

His marriage was probably in England, and upon his emigration to New England he brought with him the "kinsman," thought to be nephew, Humphrey Spinning, whom he remembers in his will, and who "had been taken by his relative when but a child from his father in England."[2] His wife died at Delaware Bay, leaving two hundred pounds to her husband. Whether she was his only wife or not seems uncertain. The inventory of his estate in 1656 makes mention of his "former wife's daughter," his "own daughter Mary," and at least one "son in law" in England.

On 6 December 1655 he refused to watch, claiming he was but a "sojourner" there in New Haven, and too old for the service needed. He made his will 20 June 1649, before going on a voyage to the Bay[3], like a provident man making his wishes known before possible accident or disaster should overtake him. However, he lived to return safely, and it was not until 29 September 1656 that his estate was inventoried. The records of the settlement are of interest here, and indicate the marriage of his daughter Mary.

Humphrey Spinning, the "kinsman," married (1) 14 October 1657 Abigail, daughter of George HUBBARD, of Guilford, and removed to that town shortly after, being admitted planter there, 13 March 1661. About 1666 he removed to Elizabeth Town, New Jersey. He married (2) Anna ???? He had five sons and, three daughters. (New .England Historical and Genealogical Register 59: 267.) Of Lettice, the step daughter of Humphrey Spinning, senior, we have no record, nor of her brother Edward, who in 1656 was in England. Child: 1. MARY; married Jonathan ROYCE. II. Mary SPINNING married about 1656 or 1657, Jonathan, son of Robert Royce, of STRATFORD.

SOURCE: The Ancestry & Posterity of Joseph Smith and Emma Hale by Audentia Smith Anderson (1926)

In The Spining, Spinning Family of New Haven, Guilford, Connecticut and Elizabethtown, N.J compiled by Edythe Wilson Thoesen is the copy of the Will of Humphrey Spinning. In it he lists Edward his son, my daughter Lettice. my daughter Mary and my kinsman Humphrey Spining.

Below the will is a paragraph, it is concerning the Humphrey will: This will of said Humphey Spinning was presented and read. The Court looked upon the will as defectvie and not fully declaring the mind of the testator. They did with the free consent of all parties that is Mary, Spining, his own daughter, Lettice his former wifes daughter and Humphrey Spining his kinsman and Edward his stepson in England decided that the estate be divided in five parts, his daughter Mary to have two parts and the other three parts to be divided between Lettice, Edward and Humphrey. The Inventory showed 208 pounds 18 shillings 2 pence and a house at Oyster bay, not appraised.

Humphrey's wife Elizabeth had been married and had Edward and Elizabeth before she married Humphrey. Mary is the daughter of Humphrey and Elizabeth. the kinsman is the nephew , Humphrey that came from England with Humphrey, the elder in 1637.

Using these valid sources changes should be made to the family of Humphrey Spining and Elizabeth Pond. Lettice and Edward could be moved to Elizabeth Pond and no husband or marked as step children. Mary should stay as Humphrey and Elizabeth's own daughter. Humphrey is not his son and needs to be moved from that place.

I hesitate to make these changes myself but would appreciate if the people who contributed the information would do so.
