Notes |
- Humphrey De Bohun X, Earl, 7th of Hereford, 6th of Essex, and 2nd of Northampton, was the last Earl of Hereford. The title became extinct on his death in 1372, but was revived as Dukedom 1397 in the person of Henry Bolingbroke, who md Mary, Co-heir. He had two daughters and Co-heirs; the richest heiresses of their time; both were mere children when they married members of the Royal House. TITLE [EARL OF HEREFORD, ESSEX & NORTHAMPTON] The Boone and Their Name - Washington D.C. The name of Boone is said by some authorities to have been of local origin and derived from the Norman de Bohun, while others claim that it was a nickname, taken from le bon, meaning "the good." In either case the name was probably taken into England by the Normans at the time of the Conquest in 1066. It is found on ancient records in the various forms of Bohun, Bohn, Boun, Bone, Bown, Boon, and Boone, of which the last is the most generally accepted form in America today. Families of this name were to be found at early dates in the counties of Kent, Essex, Devon, Bedford, Cambridge, Hartford, Hereford, Northampton, Lincoln, Warwick, Derby, Suffolk, Salop, and London and were for the most part, of the landed gentry and nobility of Great Britain. It is said that the family of Boone was descended from the ancient Norman-French line of the Earls Bohun of Hereford, Essex, and Northampton, which was represented in the early fourteenth century by Humphray de Bohun, sixth(?) Earl of Hereford, who was made Knight of the Garter in 1365. Among the early records of the various branches of this line were those of John de Boon of Bedfordshire in the time of King Edward the First, Reginald and Matilda Boone of Cambridgeshire in 1273, Lord Bohun of Midhurst in 1363, Ralph Boun of Derbyshire in the time of King Henry the Sixth (from whom was descended Ralph Boun of Warwickshire in the time of Queen Elizabeth), one Bohun of County Salop in 1568, Ellen Boone of London in 1614, and George Boone of Devonshire in the early seventeenth century. This last mentioned member of the family, George Boone of Devonshhire, was the father of a son named George, who married Sarah Uppey and was the father of, among others, a son also named George, who was married near Exeter, Devonshire, to Mary Maugridge in the latter seventeenth century and emigrated with his family to America sometime before 1717.
