Notes |
- Bernella Elizabeth Snow Gardner was born on June 26, 1866, at Pine Valley, Utah, just six months after her parents had come to this part of the state.
Her early recollections of this little town is that the houses were set down in little clearings in the sage brush. There were no trees, lawns, or flowers. As she grew up to wander beyond the little clearing she saw Pine Valley as it was, a spot of gorgeous beauty.
Her early associations were very choice and were strong influences throughout her life. At 16, in 1880, Eliza R. Snow and Zina D. Young came to organize the Primary association and Bernella was appointed treasurer and later secretary for eight years.
She married Robert Berry Gardner on March 8, 1883 in the St. George Temple. Since Robert’s father had been so active in the building of the Temple and it was the first one to be completed in the Mountain West. This marriage was a great and significant event in Bernella’s life.
In 1884 her husband was appointed Post Master and continued for thirty years. The mail carrier boarded at her home and for many years she had to have breakfast ready at 6:00 in the morning.
At this time, efforts to enforce the Edmunds Law against Plural Marriage were so great it was persecution. The Bishop appointed Robert and Bernella to open their house to travelers, since their children were small and Deputy Marshalls traveling in disguise could get little information from the children. To their home became sort of a hotel.
In 1886, Robert with his brother, John, Royal and Alonzo started a small merchandise store. The management was assigned to Robert and Bernella, since Robert had his farm and cattle most of the store and hotel fell to her.
In 1899, she was appointed President of the Primary Association and at that time much time and energy was devoted to her many duties. Later she found time to work in the St. George Temple, this was the beginning of a great achievement in the genealogical work that came later life.
She was elected as school trustee in 1896 and was secretary of the school board.
Her husband went on a mission to the Northern States in 1896. Bernella Gardner Jones was born one month after her father left for his mission. Robert Gardner was injured with escaping gas in Kansas City and returned home ill. He had poor health for a year afterwards.
In 1915, they moved to Cedar City. Over work and responsibility were perhaps partly responsible for a severe attack or arthritis which crippled her hands and joints. She became weary of mind and body and was dependent for three or four years.
But while in Logan, Elder Orin Jarvis administered to her and promised in the name of the Lord that she should be healed of this infirmity. The time didn’t pass too quickly but the fulfillment of the promise came. She and her sister Celestia were visiting their aged mother in September 1920. As they (Celestia and Bernella) lay in bed awake, she felt as she says, “The despondency leave as plainly as though someone had lifted the covers from me. I said to Celestia, I’m well and I’m still very thankful that Heavenly Father saw fit to heal me of the gloom although I still have arthritis.”
In 1922, she and her husband were asked to be members of the Genealogical Committee in Cedar. She was secretary for twelve years. She took a correspondence course in that field from B.Y.U. Then she examined the records of the work done for her kindred and found that a great deal of duplication had been done and many omission had been made. She began making out proper sheets for baptisms and endowments and sending these to relatives who could do Temple work, since she was crippled.
So much work has she done in the field of Genealogy, her name is listed in the “Who’s Who” in the Institute of American Genealogy.
The couple were blessed with nine children. They are Robert S., Jessie Gardner Whitehead, May (died when small), Arthur, Fernleigh, Bernella Gardner Jones, Mamie Gardner Barker, Thelma Gardner Ashdown, and Luree Gardner Porter.
