  Charles Ralph Amott was an outstanding individual. The manner in which he conducted his life was an inspiration to all who knew him from his own family to his associates in church and business. This good man was born September 25, 1895 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Mary Ellen Duncan and Charles Amott. Early in life he began to demonstrate those characteristics that were to be so important in his life. Grandma reports that as a child Ralph could not stand to be messy; he wanted his hands and faced washed immediately from jam and other things. As a young child Dad moved with the family to Alberta, Canada where they lived for a few years, but otherwise he lived his whole early life in Salt Lake. Unfortunately, from the time that the family returned from Canada to the time that Dad graduated from the L.D.S. High School nothing is recorded. However, upon graduating from school Dad went to work for Heber J. Grant and Company. Dad has jokingly remarked that they didn't like his work so they shipped him off to Japan for a four year mission. This was early 1914. Having performed well, Dad was released on February 12, 1918 and returned home. Almost immediately he entered the military and was assigned to the Vancouver Barracks in Washington where, because of his typing skill, he became company clerk. With the signing of the Armistice he soon returned home. Dad, who had a fine tenor voice, joined the Tabernacle Choir along with his friend Edith Lyall Eddington. They were married on June 30, 1921 in the Salt Lake Temple. They honeymooned to the Grandaddy Lakes as the both loved the out-of-doors. In fact, they were charter members of the Wasatch Mountain Club. By 1932, Dad was a sales manager for Pembroke's and we were situated in a new home. However, at this time a change in employment was occasioned by the Great Depression when Dad, being the father of four young children, found it necessary to associate himself with the Ex-Cel-Sis Beauty Products Company and move to Indianapolis, Indiana. To further improve himself he took a course from the Sales Analysis Institute of Chicago. This gave rise to his joining them as an instructor and necessitated, in 1937, a move of the family to Le Grange, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago. Dad traveled considerably in this new assignment, especially to clients located in Cleveland and Akron, Ohio. So, in the fall of 1940, the family moved to Cleveland Hights. During this period of transition, Dad never forgot his responsibility to the Church. As an active Seventy he was Branch President in Indianapolis and in Chicago and District President in Cleveland. With their children nearly grown and beginning to leave home, Dad and Mom were just beginning to settle into a permanent home life when, on February 12, 1948, the family kidney disease caught up to Dad and at the young age of 52 he passed away, leaving behind a family who respected and loved him very much. -Written by one of Charles Ralph Amott's children Charles Ralph Amott was a salesman.
