So shall it be with my father: he shall be
called a prince over his posterity, holding
the keys of the patriarchal priesthood over the kingdom of God on earth, even the Church
of the Latter Day Saints, and he shall sit in the general assembly of patriarchs, even in
council with the Ancient of Days when he shall sit and all the patriarchs with him and shall
enjoy his right and authority under the direction of the Ancient of Days.

    • Henry was Surety for the observance of the Magna Charta. He became the lst Earl of Hereford through his paternal grandmother of the House of Milo. Died on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land in 1220. The Arms of the English Boones- Boutell says (page 601) "The blazon of the Bohun shield, of which there are so many fines examples in existance, is: Azure, a Bend argent, cottised and between six lioncels, rampant or. The founder of the Bohuns as an English family was a Humphrey de Bohun, one of the fortunate adventurers at Hastings. His son of the same name acquired important terrestrial possessions near Salisbury by his marriage with Matilda, daughter of the feudal Baron Edward de Saresby (D'Evreuz). Their son, another Humphrey, married Margeria, one of the Co-heiresses of Milo (Miles), Constable and Lord of Gloucester and Hereford, and their grandson, Henry de Bohun. A.D. 1199, was created Earl of Hereford. Now the Arms attributed to the Earls of Salisbury, are: Azure siz lioncels ramp, and these Arms the Bohuns may be considered to have adopted in commemoration of their own advantageous alliance with the heiress of Salisbury. The Arms attributed to Milo, on the other hand (and still emblazoned and quartered in the Brass of his descendants, Alianore, Duchess of Gloucester) are: Gules, two bends, the one or, and the other argent. As the Lords of Hereford in their own person, the Bohuns evidently placed upon their shield the silver bend of Hereford, interposing it between the two groups into which their Salisbury lions would be divided; and at the same time, further to show their descent from Milo, they appear to have bisected his golden bend, and to have cottesed their own silver bend with the two bendlets thus obtained. Possibly these bends of the Shield of Milo may be heraldic representation of the official batons of the bold warrior as Constable of the Castles of Gloucester and Hereford; and the Shield of the Bohuns, and their bend in the first instance, may have been regarded as associated with the office and rank of Constable of England, so long held by the De Bohun family with their Hereford Earldom." Note: Heraldry, introduced in England by the Norman conquorers, was in terms of Norman French. These terms, still in use, constitute the technical language of this science and serve to accurately and strictly define a shield of arms as surely as a picture. While these terms are given inany unabridged dictionary, for the convenience of the reader a gloss-dictionary, for the convenience of the reader a glossary of the terms used to describe the Boone Arms is here given. The term is given in capitals, the abreviation in parenthesis, with the definition following. 1. Shield: Chief, upper part; Base, lower part; Dexter, the shield's right (the observer's left); Sinister, the shield's left. All objects normally face the dexter side of the shield. 2. Position of animals: A. Rampant (ramp), standing on the sinister hind leg, with both fore legs elevated, the dexter above the sinister, head in profile, facing dexter; B. Passant (pass) animal walking, with dexter paw raised, otherwise as in a; C. Stantant(stant), standing, facing as in A; D. Sejant (sej), sitting, facing as in A. in A. 3. Position of Head. When normal, the head is in profile, facing dexter; this head position is modified for A, B, C, and D, in paragraph 2, by adding: Guardant (guard), heard turned to face the observer; Regardant (regard), head in profile, looking backward. 4. Colors: Gules (gu) red; Azure az) blue; Vert, green; Purpure (pur) purple; and Sable (sa) black. Color is technically called tincture. No particular tint of color is employed that being simply a matter of tast. Proper (pp) natural color. The first color named, in designating Arms, is that of the shield. 5. Metals: Argent (ar) silver; Or, gold. 6. Furs: Ermine (erm) ermine; Erminois, gold field with black spots. Vair, oblong patches of white and blue (squirrel's skin). 7. Bend, an ordinary drawn from dexter chief to sinister base; when in a reverend position it is a Bend Sinister, erroneously called a mark of bastardy. 8. A bend is cottised when between two bendlets. 9. Lioncels, young lions. 10. Chapeu, cap of maintenance, or estate. A symbol of high honor (Hope's Heraldry, 155) 11. Helm, helmet. The great helm was commonly made to rest upon the shoulders, and was secured to the knights person by a chain. 12. Escallop, shell; this charge was assumed by the Crusaders on their return from the Holy Land. 13. Mullet, a star. 14. Marlet, a martin. These armorial bearings, coming from Norman ancestors both by consangnity and by marriage, are of the earliest in actual use in England. Credited to Henry de Bohun, first Earl of Hereford (1176-1220), they were blazoned for the Bohuns on the earliest Rolls, those of Henry III. The same gold lions before 1200 graced the blue shield of William Longespee, Earl of Salisbury, by right of his wife, Ela, a great granddaughter of Edward d'Evereux of Salisbury. For more than seven centuries the old Arms of the House of Boone have stood unchanged, and now head a list of sixteen coats, the results of differencing, assigned to the various branches of the family in Burke's General Armory. Nos. 9 and 10 of Burke's list are identical with No. 1 except No. 9 has a gold bend, and No. 10 has demi-lions. Nos. 3 and 4 are differenced only by charging the silver bend with the Crusader's symbol, three red scallops, to which the family was entitled. No. 12 follows Nos. 2 and 4, but differences by reducing the number of lions to two, and their tincture to silver. No. 11 is differenced from No. 1 by omitting the lions, and changing the incture of the two cottises to silver. No. 2 shows a Crusader's cross of blue on a gold field (used in 1363), thus retaining only the old colors. No. 13 differences No. 2 by showing a silver cross on a blue field. A study of the entire list shows that each succeeding coat bears a relationship to the original Arms. The Boone Crest and Badge - The Crest came into use at a much later period than the Arms, but the Badge was of equal, if not greater, antiquity. The Crest was personal to the wearer, and was not inherited. On the other hand, the Badge, handed down to all branches of the family, was used with equal propriety by sons and daughters, and was worn on the livery of all household servants and retainers. Neither were subject to the control of the government as was the case with Arms. The crest was always held to be an insignia of great dignity and honor. Though now represented above a shield of arms, formerly it was actually worn upon the Basinet and Helm. It is exclusively the heraldic insignia of men, and is not borne in the armorial insignia of ladies, whatever may be their rank, with the sole exception of the sovereign. In the first instance the crest was usually some figure or device that was borne in the Arms (Boutell, pp. 98, 166, 264). Thus the selection by the Bohuns of a gold lion as a crest was in keeping with the custom of the time. Humphrey de Bohun VIII, a warrior of distinction, who, in 1322, lost his life in the battle of Boroughbridge, for a seal surrounded his Shield of Arms with three lions passant guardant, in honor of this wife, Princess Elizabeth, and no doubt a lion statant guardant was his crest. In support of this view is the seal of Roger of Lebourne, who died in 1284, which shows the six Salisbury (Bohun) lions rampant on the shield of arms, and at one side a helm with the same lion as a crest (Hope's Heraldry, p. 125). Bohun's fifth son, William, a famous soldier, Earl of Northampton, used two elephant tusks as a crest, but William's son, Humphrey X, who, besides his father's title, inherited those of his grandfather, selected the latter's lion stantant guardant as his crest surmounts the old Arms, being no. 1 of Burke's list, which assigns to the Boones five crests, while Fairbain assigns an additional crest, a bell.It is surprising the famous Bohun White Swan is not of the number. Though a seal of Humphrey de Bohun VIII (1320) shows the White Swan supporting his shield of arms (Boutell, pl. xx), there is no record of its use as a crest by any one of thesurname Bohun or Boone. Yet the swan was repeatedly used as a crest by the husbands of Boone women, many of royal blood. Of existing Badges, none are more famous than the Bohun White Swan; nor more cherished, for it has been handed down through the centuries unchanged. It is given a human touch by Alianore Bohun, Duchess of Gloucester, who, as a love token for her royal husband, Thomas of Woodstock, embroidered a cup of gold damask with their initials "T" and A and swans of pearls," and the Duke put her Swan upon his seal above his Shield of Arms (Boutell, pl. lxx. A marble slab of the armorial insignia of Henry of Lancaster, afterwards King Henry IV, who married Mary Bohun (sister of Alianore), shows her White Swanwearing a helm with the Bohun crest attached to his standard with a chain (Boutell, pl 1xxix). The grandson of Thomas and Alianore, Humphrey Stafford, Earl of Buckingham, Hereford, Northampton, Stafford and Perche, shows upon his seal the old Bohun Arms, quartered with other arms, surmounted by his crest, the White Swan of his grandmother (Hope's Heraldry, p. 95). Of this heraldic insignia, Rothery says: "The swan, being a royal bird of the chase, and having a long and illustrous record in legendary tales of most nations, more especially in the north, where they appear as carriers of human souls to Thor's Valhalla, play an important part in heraldry. The Swan is especially a bird of chivalry of queens and knight-errantry. It is generally white or silver, with black beak and red legs, and is then emblazoned "proper." In our history, the most famous swan is the white one, gorged with a golden cornet, with chain attached, passing over its back, which belonged to the Bohuns. They derived it from the Mandevilles, Earls of Essex, who got it from their forebears, the Fitzswans, whose progenitor came over from Normandy with Duke William in 1066. So this is the real Norseman's mystic messenger from the outer world. The Bohuns transmitted the Swan to the Lancastrian branch of the Plantagenets, the Staffords, and many other noble houses." Burke's List of Boone Arms and Crests - 16 coats of arms and five crests (Not itemized here.) See p 36 in The House of Boone and Its' Armorial Bearings. deBohun (Boone) Chapter V - Through Henry de Bohun (1176-1220) first Earl of Hereford, Const. of Eng., grandson of Humphrey III de Bohun and Margaret de Milo, eldest daughter of Milo, Earl of Hereford, the honors were carried over to the de Bohun line because no male heir appeared. Also the hereditary right of constable passed to the de Bohun family. Born 1176, on the accession of John, he was created Earl of Hereford by Charter, Apr. 28, 1199. In 1220 he was sent with other nobles to summon his uncle, William the Lion, of Scotland to appear at Lincoln to do homage. In 1215 he had joined the confederate barons who obtained the concession of Magna Charta, and was one of the twenty-five appointed to insure its observance. On John's death, he still adhered to the party of Louis of France and was taken prisoner at the battle of 20 May 1217. He died on a Pilgrimage to the Holy Land 1 June 1220. His wife was Maud, daughter of Geoffrey FitzPiers, Earl of Essex, by whom he had a son Humphrey, who succeeded him. ----------------------------- AMERICAN IMMIGRANTS DESCENDED FROM MAGNA CHARTA BARONS and/or CRUSADERS William d'Aubeney (Aubigny) Roger le Bigod Hugh le Bigod Henry de Bohun Richard de Clare Gilbert de Clare John Fitz Robert Robert Fitz Walter William de Huntingfield John de Lacy William de Lanvalay William Malet William de Mowbray Saher de Quincy Robert de Roos Geoffrey de Say Robert de Vere Hugh Magnus, Duke of France William VII, Count of Poitou Edward I, King of England Fredrick III, Barborossa Stephen of Bois William de Mohun Saher de Quincy Gilbert de Clare William de Longspee Louis VII, King of France Geoffrey of Bologne Below is a partial list of "Gateway" ancestors with lines to Magna Charta Barons: *New Ancestors may be added and/or become unacceptable as new evidence is uncovered.
