WILLIAM GEE William Gee was born on 5 April 1739 in Lyme, New London Co., Connecticut, son of Solomon Gee and Deborah Huntley. William married Abigail Mack on 1 January 1761 at, Lyme, New London Co., Conn. Abigail Mack was born 1 November 1741 in Lyme, New London Co., Conn., and was the daughter of Rev. Ebenezer Mack and Abigail Davis. William died 16 September 1817 in Lyme, New London Co., Connecticut and was buried in Old Stone Church Cemetery, Lyme, Conn. Abigail died 23 March 1838 in East Lyme, New London Co., Connecticut and is also buried in Old Stone Church Cemetery in Lyme, Conn.. Children:- surname GEE: Abigail - born 26/28 January 1762 Zopher - born 28 August 1763 died 14 August 1829 Sarah - born 21 October 1765 died 14 December 1788 William, Jr - born 13 October 1767 died 27 July 1843 Elizabeth - born 13 June 1769 died 1858 Polly - born 25 November 1781 Lyme, New London Co., Conn. married Abel Smith 1 August 1798 Lyme, New London Co., Conn. Abel Smith b. 7 JAN 1766 son of Samuel Smith and Mary - - -. Polly and Abel reportedly removed from Lyme to Chenango Co., New York. No further record. Note:- some records indicate that the marriage of Polly and Abel occurred during the month of April, 1798 on the 17th day. Abigail Mack was a fourth generation descendant of John Mack who reportedly was born at Inverness in Scotland and emigated in 1669 to America where he lived for some years at Salisbury, Mass. and then relocating to Lyme, Conn. about 1696. One source advises that John Mack "descended from a family of sufficient importance to possess a coat of arms with the motto "In spe et labore transigo vilam" but nothing more is known of this connection. John Mack married at Salisbury Sarah Bagley, daughter of Orlando Bagley and Sarah Colby, and was a granddaughter of Anthony Colby who has presented something of an enigma to genealogists tracing the Colby line because of the inability to definitely establish proof of his parentage and antecedents in England and Scotland. However, it would appear that this Colby line connects with royalty and traces back to the first king of England. The Mack and Gee families were closely associated both at Lyme and later at Marlow, New Hampshire. Members of the Mack family figured rather prominently in the records of Lyme, Connecticut and some of them became quite well known as builders of dams which played such an important part in the days of the early settlers when the streams were much utilized to provide a source of power to operate various kinds of mills. It was Abigail's father, Rev. Ebenezer Mack, who was a minister in the Baptist church and went from Lyme to Marlow, N.H. where this faith was the first established there. Abigail's brother, William, married Ruth Gee who was a sister of Abigail's husband, William Gee. A cousin of Abigail named Lucy Mack became the wife of .Joseph Smith and was the mother of Joseph Smith II who gained reknown as the Prophet and leader of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints; also this Smith family figures importantly in later generations of our Gee genealogy. Some space also must be devoted to clarification of an apparent mis understanding pertaining to Abigail Mack's mother, Abigail Davis. This comes about due to the fact that there existed two persons having the same name Abigail Davis at Lyme or that general area. Many sources have seized upon the wrong one when documenting Ebenezer Mack's wife, so their version may be the most commonly accepted one. Reference here is made to one Abigail Fox who married first Charles Hill and had several children including a daughter Abigail; after Charles Hill died, she remarried to William Davis and there was no issue but daughter Abigail became known as Abigail Davis and supposedly married Ebenezer Mack. Disputing this story there is the will of Mrs. Abigail Davis which clearly names "my daughter Abigail Green" and also mentions her son, Charles Hill, thus proving that she is the Abigail Fox who married Charles Hill Sr. The daughter, Abigail Hill, married first in 1749 Timothy Green; as described in the Hemp stead Papers, "Deacon Timothy Green and Abigail Hill. He near 70 and she above 40, a maid, were published." The other version which appears more acceptable says that one William Warman married Abigail Lay and had a daughter Abigail who married first Daniel Davis and by whom there was a daughter named Abigail. The daughter Abigail Davis became the wife of Ebenezer Mack and they then had their daughter Abigail Mack who married William Gee. It is further found that Abigail (Warman) Davis married second John Mack, Jr. (as his second wife), the father of Ebenezer Mack. Also, William Warman married second Sarah (Bagley) Mack, the widow of John Mack, Sr. In his will, William Warman named among his heirs daughters: Johannah Davis, Abigail Mack, Phebe Davis, Elizabeth Davis, Mary Davis, Jane Davis, Elizabeth Mack; and also his grandson William Davis and great-grandson William Warman Mack who was a son of Ebenezer Mack and Abigail (Warman) Davis and who married Ruth Gee Abigail Mack, wife of Rev. Ebenezer Mack, d. 9 March 1788 in her 74th year and is buried in the J. Allen Cemetery at Marlow, N.H. along with several of the other children of Ebenezer and Abigail Mack. Ebenezer is buried at Lyme, Connecticut. William Gee served in the Revolutionary War as Lt. in the Connecticut Volunteers. When William's brothers and sisters left Lyme for new frontiers in New Hampshire and elsewhere, he acquired their interests in the land at Lyme and remained there keeping the home place intact. We have very little information about the life of William's family at Lyme but it would appear that he and sons Zopher and William, Jr. were busily engaged in managing the farm and prospered in so doing. And finally son Zopher disposed of his holdings at Lyme and joined the group from Lyme going to the Western Reserve of Connecticut in northeastern Ohio in 1810-1811, which preceded by some six years the death of William Gee, Sr. However, William was not left alone as his wife was still living and son William, Jr. had a a rather large children of his own on the premises In the family records, we find the following receipts on settlement of William Gee's estate: $10 Betsey Smith, wife of Nehemiah (10 November 1817) $10 Polly Smith, wife of Abel (10 November 1817) All personal estate Abigail Gee, wife (1 October 1818) "Moveables" William Gee, son ( 1 October 1818) $27.31 total value - (one ½ grindstone, one ½ of the stills, one blue coat, two ox chains, beetle and wedge, crow bar, drawing knife, dung fork, cash $7.)
