Selections from my great- great Grandmother Valborg’s Life history book
Great-Great Grandmother Valborg’s full name is: Valborg Frederikke Elizabeth Rasmussen Anderson
She is my Father’s great-grandmother.
I have selected a few entries I find particularly interesting and made it a question/answer format, using my Great-Great Grandmother’s journal entries.
What was the first year of your marriage like?
Married: 7 June 1911 in Manti Temple
“Our first home was Rasmus Rasmussen’s home, located down “Becky’s Alley”. Our neighbors were Swen Ross and Shoemaker Hansen. Ellery was engaged in farming. The first year we were married, Ellery came down with typhoid fever. He was very sick and had affects from that for a long time. It left him very weak. “(pg. 11)
“Shortly after this, he got a dose of poison, apparently from something he touched. Dr. Anderson recommended a dose of Epsom Salts every day for Ellery for a long time. His ears were thick as lamb ears and his whole body was swollen. He still went to work in his condition”(pg. 11)
Over a year later we had their first baby: “Aur Emil (boy) born 31 March 1912” (pg. 11)
What are some sweet things you did for each other in your marriage?
•We celebrated holidays with each other.
Valentine’s Day entry: “I had a happy surprise February 14, 1957. Ellery had the florist fix up a bouquet of red and white carnations. There was a little chute on one of these stems so I planted it and we both enjoyed watching it grow. Now three years later, it is still growing and I surely enjoy the sweet memory it brings of Ellery and that happy Valentine Day” (pg. 3).
•We went on road trips together. That was the last thing did as we celebrated Ellery’s Birthday, two days later he died. (pg. 16)
•My parents were an example of showing love in marriage.
“My mother supported Pa through his mission and was able to set aside enough money to buy an electric [milk] separator when she had for Pa as a surprise when he returned home.”
How do you feel about education?
“I continued my schooling. My hobby was sewing. I graduated from the 8th grade in 1906. Then I went two years to the Snow Academy and graduated at the age of 16 in 1908. I made my own graduation dress. Then I specialized another 2 years in the field of Domestic Arts, during which time I took in sewing to pay the expenses of my schooling”. (pg. 7)
