- --Other Fields Ref Number: 1738 Petition for the probate of the will of John Pettit II and for the appointment of a guardian of the children was filed, Apr. 5, 1676, by Richard Law and Francis Bell. The court of Magistrates, the Governor being present, appointed Richard Law, guardian of the three younger children, their mother deceased" (Stamford Registry). American Genealogist records - "Sarah chose as her guardian Abram Ambler and John chose his uncle Daniel Scofield, Jr." John and his wife were deceased by 1684 leaving children Sarah and John and three younger children. John Pettit II bought house and lands from Samuel Brown of Stamford. He was chosen Selectman in 1671. In regard to the first recorded settlements in Connecticut, we find JohnPettit appears among the settlers, at or near Stamford, between 1642 and 1666, as having children recorded to him before 1650 and in connection with transfers of Property in 1669. His wife's name was Sarah, and besides two sons, he had three daughters, Sarah, Mary and Bethia. ...(one) John Pettit was residing there in 1699; Mary Pettit in 1731, and John Pettit in 1771. This one is the latest record of the name in that locality. We know that many Pettits had removed from Stamford, and joined their kindred on Long Island, where the name had already been known for several generations. (Ref: Pettit Family of America, Part I FHL SLC 929.273 p455) Other references that need to be checked - Wethersfield, Connecticut by Church New Rochelle, New York Greenwich, Connecticut Hugenot Emigration to America by Dr. C. W. Baird History of Stamford by Rev. Huntington Annals of Newtown, L.I. by James Ricker, Jr. Newtown (Cambridge) by Francis Jackson History of Greenwich, Connecticut by D. M. Mead Trenton, New Jersey Flemington and Amwell, N.J. Although no family records exist, or have been found to establish the relationship between the families of this name who resided early in Stamford, Connecticut, and those recorded a little later in Long Island, yet there are strong points of collateral evidence which seem to show that such a relationship did exist.
