Nichols Charles A. Nichols, formerly and employee of The Tribune and other local newspapers, passed away Friday afternoon at a hospital after an illness of about a year. He was born in Quincy, Ill, on August 13, 1866, and his father, Charles Sumner Nichols, was known as a pioneer circus man. While Mr. Nichols was still a youth, he and his father started west. Their first stop was in Colorado, where an initial venture in small town journalism was made. Successful there, they came on to Salt Lake, establishing the Times, an early daily. Later Mr. Nichols, as linotype operator, served on the old Salt Lake Herald, then joined the Herald-Republican, and later The Tribune, working in its mechanical department for more than fourteen years. Twenty years ago, while employed on the Salt Lake Herald, Mr. Nichols made what was then a world's record in setting type on the linotype. He set at the rate of approximately 2500 words and hour. Mr. Nichols is survived by the widow, Mrs. Jennie Nichols, 427 East Sixth South street, and a son, Clarence Nichols, both of Salt Lake, as well as a mother and sister, Mrs. Sarah M. Nichols and Mrs. Carrie Christensen, respectively, of Portland. Modern Woodmen of the World, the Elks, and the local Typographical union are organizations of which Mr. Nichols was a member. Although burial will be in City cemetery, further funeral arrangements are being postponed until the arrival of Mrs. Nichols and Mrs. Christensen from Portland. !Funeral of C. A. Nichols Is Set for Tuesday Funeral services of Charles A. Nichols will be held at the Larkin Mortuary at 2 p.m. Tuesday. Mr. Nichols was a linotypist on several Salt Lake Newspapers for more that thirty years. !Newspaper article - date unknown Visitor Once Held World Speed Record on the Linotype Boise is entertaining as its guest this week C. A. Nichols, representative of a check writer agency, who once held the speed record of the world as a linotype operator. He is here in the interests of the company he represents. For many years Mr. Nichols was a linotype operator and by constant practice on this remarkable machine, which has so much to do with the composition of a newspaper or magazine, succeeded in working up such remarkable speed that he became the peer among all operators. !Newspaper article - date unknown C. A. Nichols Returns Champion Linotypist Sells Mining Stock in Chicago Charles A. Nichols, champion linotypist of the world, who broke all records for rapid operating of the typesetting machines while employed by The Herald last July, returned from Chicago, where he had been for two weeks on a business trip last night. On his homeward trip, he was mixed up in two railroad wrecks, in one of which two passengers were killed and a number were injured. When near Omaha, his train ran into a misplaced switch, and the baggage car was smashed, but the passenger coaches did not leave the track. When near Sidney, Neb., Wednesday, his train was held up by the wrecking of a passenger train ahead, in which two passengers were killed. Nichols went to Chicago a few weeks ago in company with O. A. Tibbits and Dr. J. J. Snyder to float an issue of $100,000 of the stock of the recently organized Yerington Center Copper Company. The entire issue was sold and the agents wired for more stock. He was married and his wife was Jennie Peterson Nichols; His age was 59 years, 8 months and 9 days. He was buried at Salt Lake City, Utah City Cemetery on 4/26/1927. He was shipped in for interment.
