So shall it be with my father: he shall be
called a prince over his posterity, holding
the keys of the patriarchal priesthood over the kingdom of God on earth, even the Church
of the Latter Day Saints, and he shall sit in the general assembly of patriarchs, even in
council with the Ancient of Days when he shall sit and all the patriarchs with him and shall
enjoy his right and authority under the direction of the Ancient of Days.

Robert White (his surname was sometimes spelled Whighte) was a son of Robert White and Alice Wright. He was born about 1558, in either Shalford or Messing, both in Essex County, England. He was christened on May 17, 1560. He lived in Shalford most of his married life, although he died in Messing, where he apparently went a few months before his death. Some speculate that he may have been born in Messing because when he died he left money to the poor of that village. The baptisms of nearly all of his children and the marriages of his daughters are recorded in Shalford. Four of his children--Elizabeth, John, Mary, and Anna--came to America with their spouses some years after Robert's death.

On June 24, 1585 he married Bridget Allgar, daughter of William Allgar and Margaret Ann Parye of Shalford. He may have been married previously, and his eldest son Daniel may have been a son from his first marriage. The other 7 children were all born to Bridget.

Robert White was considered a well-to-do man for his time. He was referred to as a yeoman, a designation used for an independent farmer who owned his own land. It was uncommon to own one's own land in the 1500s, as most of the land was under the control of the nobility or the church.

In his will, dated May 27, 1617, he left money to the poor of Messing, although not to the poor of Shalford where he had lived most of his life. He also left money to Rev. Richard Rogers, a "non-conformist," thus seemingly showing his openness to new religions, and to Rev. Bartholomew Scrivener, an established church minister, thereby showing his continued loyalty to the established church. He left money to two of his servants, one of whom he also called a kinsman. The majority of his estate went to his wife, Bridget, and to his children and the spouses of those of his children who had married. The children named in the will of 1617 are listed below:

Son Daniel White (eldest son), probably born to previous wife, named co-executor of will along with Robert's wife Bridget
Daughter Sarah White (eldest daughter) born about 1586, and her husband James Bowtell or Boutwell
Daughter Mary White, born 1590 and her husband Joseph Loomis [came to America in 1638 with sister Anna White and brother-in-law John Porter]
Daughter Elizabeth White, born 1591, and her husband William Goodwin [came to America in 1632 with her brother John White and his wife]
Son Nathaniel White, born about 1587, died 1623 in England, spouse unknown
Unmarried daughter Bridget White, born 1594, later married John Christman/Christmas
Unmarried daughter Anna White, born 1600, later married John Porter [came to America in 1638 with sister Mary White and brother-in-law Joseph Loomis]
Unmarried son John White (youngest son), born about 1597, later married Mary Levitt [came to America in 1632, elected Elder of South Church in Hartford, Connecticut]
