Joel Campbell and Isaac Fuller came with their families in 1805. They came form Manniscotton, Orange County , New York. They came in with ox teams and drove several cows in with them. They made their first settlement on Bentley Creek about one mile form the State line. The Campbell's moved away about 1829. Rumor says they became Mormons and some of them went west with Joseph Smith. We have tried to find some connection between them and Mormon Hill, but have not succeeded. Joel Campbell family at the time consisted of his wife and brother Benjamin, and seven sons, Joshua, Ezekiel, Joel, Jonathan, Nathaniel, Benoni and William.
JONATHAN CAMPBELL AND EUNICE PHEBE BUTTON
Jonathan was born to Joel Campbell and Nancy Leonard in 1761, in Providence, Orange County, New York. He was the first Campbell to join the church in New York State. The church was just two years old when he joined it in 1832. He married Phebe Button in 1788. Eunice Phebe was the daughter of Captain Matthias Button and Phoebe Brown, She was also born in 1761. They were both baptized in 1832. They had twelve children: Susannah, Hannah, Benaijh, *Joel, Ruth, John, Benoni, Ezekiel, Frederick, William, Matilda and Jonathan.
Jonathan had many persecutions and mobbings in the latter years when he lived in Nauvoo. The saints started leaving the city on February 14, 1846. Great hardships were suffered. The first night out, nine babies were born in the inclement and cold weather. Their shelters were poor. They were some blankets fasted to poles. They had bid farewell to their beautiful Nauvoo. They had little substance or clothes. The governor of Iowa had been asked for Protection from the Indians, but he showed no response. (Taken from Essentials from Church History.)
Jonathan was in company with others who endured this extreme cold. They pulled their wagons to Mt. Pisgah. It was named after a small range of mountains by the River Jordan in the Bible. Pisgah means summit. Mt. Pisgah was a settlement of several thousand acres of land that were fenced for cultivation. This place became a resting Place for many weary exiles for several years while crossing the plains. It was twenty-seven miles west of Garden Grove.
Jonathan and his son, Joel both died at Mt. Pisgah. Iowa and were burned in unmarked graves. Joel died of cholera in Aug of 1846. Jonathan died in 1849. Phebe had already died. She died in 1841 in Eaton, Madison, New York.
