So shall it be with my father: he shall be
called a prince over his posterity, holding
the keys of the patriarchal priesthood over the kingdom of God on earth, even the Church
of the Latter Day Saints, and he shall sit in the general assembly of patriarchs, even in
council with the Ancient of Days when he shall sit and all the patriarchs with him and shall
enjoy his right and authority under the direction of the Ancient of Days.

ANCESTRY AND POSTERITY OF JOSEPH SMITH AND EMMA HALE. Independence, Missouri: Herald Publishing House, 1929, 1958. [FHL SPECIAL 929.273 Sm51am] International Genealogical Index Submission Forms. Salt Lake City: The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1970-1995. William was the lead toolmaker on the Canadian-Pacific Railway. The book by David Cruise and Alison Griffiths, Lords of the Line, is about the men who led this mammoth task, and tells a bit of the political environment in which William found himself working. Family tradition tells of how he stole a bag of onions one very cold winter, and survived the harsh times by eating one onion a day. Survive, he did, and in 1885, the year the last spike of the CPR was driven, moved with his family to Independence MO. William was by trade a blacksmith but evidently a very good one. People would request his services after he retired to make special shoes for race horses. He was chief tool maker for the Candian Pacific Railroad during its construction. His tools are on display at the museum in Independence, MO. Thomas Forrester Henderson in is possession of his anvil.
